Your multiplayer activity contributes to the cross-platform contest for the faction you select, and Ubisoft has historically tied rewards to faction placement. A current cross-progression rule can also determine which faction choice is kept when accounts are linked.
What choosing a faction affects
Ubisoft describes the Faction War as a cross-platform contest between the Knights, Samurai, and Vikings. Multiplayer activity advances the faction you chose, making faction selection relevant to that shared contest. Ubisoft’s Faction War guide explains the system.

The official sources cited here do not establish that choosing Knights, Samurai, or Vikings changes combat mechanics. Treat faction choice as an allegiance decision, rather than evidence of a combat advantage.
Does faction choice affect rewards?
Historically, yes: Ubisoft’s 2017 Season One recap said players earned War Assets through match performance and that rewards varied according to faction placement. That is evidence of how rewards worked then, not a current reward table; current amounts and eligibility are not established by the cited sources. Check the in-game rules for the live details.

The same 2017 recap reported that Vikings won Season One. That result does not establish which faction is strongest or most likely to win now.
Can you switch factions?
Ubisoft said faction switching was available during the off-season in its 2017 Season One recap. That is a historical rule, not confirmation of the current switching policy. Consult the current in-game rules before choosing on the assumption that you can switch later.

What happens to your faction with cross-progression?
Ubisoft’s Cross-Progression FAQ, published for its September 11, 2025 update, says that if linked accounts have different faction choices, the choice on the account that accepts the cross-progression prompt is kept.
