You can play with up to four players using local wireless or online play. A guest without their own copy can join through GameShare, subject to its limits and requirements.
Can you play Pokémon Pokopia split-screen or on one Switch 2?
Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions describe connecting multiple consoles for local wireless, online play, and GameShare. The official sources reviewed do not document split-screen or a second player sharing one console’s screen. So if you mean couch co-op on a single Switch 2, that is not an officially documented way to play Pokopia together.
Nintendo lists local wireless for 2–4 players and online play for 1–4 players on the Pokémon Pokopia product page. Those player counts do not mean split-screen: Nintendo’s setup instructions specify multiple consoles for its multiplayer options.
Pokémon Pokopia multiplayer options compared
| Mode | Players | Consoles and connection | Does every player need the game? |
|---|---|---|---|

| Online | Up to 4 | Multiple consoles connected online; requires an internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features. | For ordinary multiplayer, expect each player to have a copy. |
| GameShare nearby | Up to 2 | Separate consoles connected locally. | No. The host shares the game with a guest for the session. |
| GameShare via GameChat | Up to 2 | Separate consoles, using GameChat online. | No. The host shares the game with a guest for the session. |

How to start local or online multiplayer
- Unlock Link Play. Nintendo says the Link Play menu becomes available after approximately 30 minutes of play and reaching Environment Level 2. The time is an estimate, not a fixed timer.
- Open a town Pokémon Center. Use the PC and choose Link Play.
- Choose a local or online connection. For online invitations, use a Link Code. Online features require an internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Have the other players join from their consoles. Nintendo’s documented multiplayer setup uses multiple consoles, not multiple controllers on one shared display.
These setup steps and progression requirements are detailed in Nintendo Support.
Can a friend play without buying Pokémon Pokopia?
Yes. GameShare lets a guest join without owning Pokopia, but it still requires a separate console for the guest. Nearby GameShare uses local wireless; online GameShare uses GameChat. Nintendo describes the shared session as taking place in Palette Town, not as a second player joining the host’s main adventure on the same display.

The guest can use the host’s moves, though some interactions may be limited. Access to Palette Town requires progression: complete a habitat to attract Hitmonchan, finish its request, and learn Rock Smash. A recipient can play shared software only during the session in which it was shared, according to Nintendo’s multiplayer overview and support instructions.
