Does PS4 ban you for modding? Sony’s rules allow it to suspend a PlayStation account or console for violations, including conduct covered by its software and system-software restrictions. But Sony does not say that every action called “modding” automatically results in a ban. The consequence depends on the circumstances; Sony says suspension type and duration depend on the seriousness of the violation and the player’s offense history.
What Sony’s rules say about PS4 modding
Sony’s current US PlayStation Terms of Service make its System Software License Agreement and applicable software licenses part of the user’s agreement. The terms say a breach can lead to a temporary or permanent suspension of an account or console, and to loss or restriction of access to associated content.
Sony’s US Software EULA prohibits hacking software, unauthorized mods, and bypassing or disabling encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms. It says violating those conditions immediately voids the software license. Sony also says it may use fraud detection, telemetry, anti-cheat systems, and account-behavior audits to detect and respond to violations. These provisions establish restrictions and possible consequences; they do not promise a particular ban for every specific PS4 modification.
What the UAE system-software agreement adds
A separate PS4 System Software License Agreement reviewed here is specifically for the UAE. It expressly prohibits unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software used with system software, as well as tools that bypass PS4 security. It also says updates may prevent the use of unauthorized or pirated content or hardware. That is UAE-specific wording and should not be treated as the wording of the US agreement.

Can Sony ban your PSN account or the whole PS4?
Yes, Sony’s published terms allow suspension of either an account or a console. They are different actions with different reach. An account suspension affects the account; a console suspension blocks PlayStation service access from the device for any account.

Sony’s US terms say disc games that work without connecting to PlayStation services may still work on a suspended console. That is not a promise that offline play will remain available: Sony’s Software EULA says offline modes may change or end and are not guaranteed.

Is a modding ban temporary or permanent?
It can be either. Sony’s support guidance says account suspensions may be temporary or permanent, and serious breaches may result in a console suspension. The type and length depend on the violation’s severity and the player’s offense history. Sony does not publish a universal threshold that predicts when a particular modification will lead to suspension, or a ban rate or detection probability.

How to check or appeal a suspension
- Check the sign-in error. Sony says an error code appears when you try to sign in to a suspended account or use a suspended console.
- Look for Sony’s email. Sony usually emails the reason and suspension length to the account’s sign-in email address.
- Check My Support. Use Sony’s suspension guidance to check status and find the relevant next steps.
- Review appeal eligibility. Sony provides appeal opportunities in certain cases, including permanent account suspensions. Not every suspension type is appealable.
