DELTARUNE is not established as taking place before or after UNDERTALE. Creator Toby Fox describes it as a different world, and the official site calls it a “parallel story” to UNDERTALE—not a confirmed prequel or sequel.
Is DELTARUNE a prequel or sequel to UNDERTALE?
Neither label is supported by the official explanation. Fox’s DELTARUNE FAQ says, “Essentially, this is not the world of UNDERTALE.” It explains that the two games’ characters have lived different lives and that the UNDERTALE world remains as the player left it.
The official DELTARUNE site describes the game as a “parallel story to UNDERTALE.” Taken together, those descriptions point to a separate world and a parallel story, not a settled shared timeline with a before-and-after order.
Why does the FAQ say to play DELTARUNE after UNDERTALE?
Fox says DELTARUNE is “just a game you can play after you complete UNDERTALE, if you want to.” That is an optional recommendation about the order in which a player may play the games. It does not say DELTARUNE’s events happen later in the characters’ chronology.

Could the games still be connected?
Yes. The FAQ says, “That doesn’t mean there will be no connections at all though,” and notes that the worlds may have different rules. It leaves room for connections, but does not set out an exact timeline or explain every relationship between the worlds. A character resemblance or reference alone therefore does not establish that one game’s events precede or follow the other’s.
What is the current chapter status?
As of October 8, 2026, the official site lists DELTARUNE Chapters 1–5 as available, with more planned as free updates. The FAQ says Chapter 6 is in development and not completed; that status may change. Neither the chapter lineup nor a store release date establishes the games’ in-world chronology.
