Yes. Nintendo systems have games rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB, but that does not mean Nintendo developed or published every one. Check the rating for the specific game, edition, and country: age-rating labels differ by region, and a PEGI 18 rating is not the same as an ESRB M rating.
What does ESRB M mean?
The ESRB’s Mature 17+ category is generally suitable for ages 17 and older. Nintendo says games in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language. Nintendo’s ESRB guidance explains the rating categories and how they apply to games.

Mature 17+ is distinct from ESRB Adults Only (AO). Nintendo says it does not sell or license AO games. Nintendo’s ratings information also notes that the ESRB, rather than Nintendo, assigns ESRB ratings.
Are there M-rated games on Nintendo Switch?
Yes. Nintendo’s U.S. online store has a Mature 17+ category, confirming that games in that ESRB category are available in its catalog. The category count can change as the catalog changes, so a snapshot count is not a reliable permanent total. Browse Nintendo’s U.S. game store for current listings.

Does an M rating mean Nintendo published the game?
No. A game can be available for Nintendo hardware without being developed or published by Nintendo. For example, Nintendo Spain’s page for DOOM on Nintendo Switch names Bethesda as the publisher. The Spanish listing identifies a game-card edition as well as a download edition.
Why can the same game have different age ratings?
Ratings depend on the region and the rating organization. Nintendo Spain lists DOOM for Switch as PEGI 18. That establishes the Spanish listing’s PEGI classification; it does not establish an ESRB rating for a U.S. edition. Do not translate PEGI 18 into ESRB M as if the labels were interchangeable.

Nintendo says Switch 2 and Switch are not region-locked and may play games that do not carry ESRB ratings. Its parental-control settings can use a different ratings organization depending on the region. Nintendo’s parental-controls and ratings overview provides regional context.

- For a U.S. physical copy: check the rating on the game’s packaging.
- For a U.S. digital purchase: check the rating displayed before purchase in Nintendo’s U.S. store.
- For another country or edition: look for the rating shown on that market’s listing or packaging, and note which organization issued it.
Nintendo says ratings are displayed on physical packaging and before purchase for digital games sold through its U.S. store. Because labels can differ across regions and editions, use the rating attached to the exact copy you plan to play rather than assuming a rating from another market applies.
