Not in the unrestricted Java Edition sense. Minecraft on Nintendo Switch is Bedrock Edition, where the supported route to custom content is the in-game Marketplace. Nintendo lists creator-made add-ons, worlds, cosmetics, and adventures there. Microsoft also documents a way to open an add-on-enabled world on a console through a Windows Bedrock computer and a Realm, but that is not direct file installation on the Switch.
What “mods” means on Nintendo Switch
Players often use “mods” to mean any custom Minecraft content, but the available options depend on the edition. Minecraft identifies Nintendo Switch as a Bedrock platform; Java Edition is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Microsoft describes Bedrock add-ons as content that can change how a world looks and how entities behave. They are not the same as Java Edition’s third-party mod ecosystem.

Nintendo’s Minecraft product page describes the Switch Marketplace as offering creator-made add-ons, worlds, cosmetics, and additional adventures. It is a curated, in-game option rather than an open-ended mod loader for arbitrary downloads. Marketplace listings can change, so browse the game’s current Marketplace for what is available.
Ways to use custom content on Switch
| Option | What it provides | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Switch Bedrock Marketplace | Creator-made add-ons, worlds, cosmetics, and adventures | Available in-game on Switch, according to Nintendo. Marketplace content uses Minecoins; the Minecraft Switch FAQ says they can be purchased with real currency in the game store or eShop. That FAQ dates to the 2018 Bedrock Switch release, so check current account and purchase prompts. |
| Bedrock add-on world shared through a Realm | A world with add-ons active, opened on a console | Microsoft’s documented method requires a Windows 10 or 11 computer running Bedrock Edition, an add-on-enabled world, and a Realm subscription. It is not a direct import of files onto the Switch. |
| Java Edition mods | Third-party Java Edition modifications | Java Edition is listed for Windows, Mac, and Linux, not Switch. The Switch runs Bedrock Edition. |
How to access Marketplace content
- Open Minecraft on Switch and choose the in-game Marketplace.
- Browse the current creator-made add-ons, worlds, cosmetics, and adventures, then follow the purchase or download prompts for the item you want.
- If the item requires Minecoins, check the in-game store or eShop for the current purchase options. The older Minecraft FAQ says Minecoins and Marketplace purchases can be portable to other Bedrock devices when you sign in with a Microsoft account; verify the current account and purchase behavior shown in-game.
Nintendo currently says online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Requirements can vary by feature, and Minecraft’s Switch FAQ specifically associated Nintendo Switch Online with Realms play. Check the current prompt for the feature you intend to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Can you import downloaded add-on files directly?
The official instructions reviewed do not document a way to import arbitrary downloaded add-on files directly on the Switch itself. Microsoft instead documents a computer-and-Realm workflow: on a Windows 10 or 11 computer with Bedrock Edition, upload a world with add-ons active to a Realm, then open that world on the console. See Microsoft’s Getting Started with Add-Ons documentation for the supported add-on workflow. This establishes an official route for accessing an add-on-enabled world on console; it does not establish that every file or add-on will work.

What to expect before choosing a version
- Want easy, supported custom content on Switch? Use the Marketplace and check its current listings.
- Want to bring a Bedrock add-on world from a computer to console? Microsoft’s documented route uses Windows Bedrock and a Realm subscription.
- Want Java-style mod loaders or arbitrary third-party mod files? Switch is not the Java Edition platform, and the official sources reviewed do not document direct installation of those mods on the console.
