Dragon Age’s Series-Wide “Uber-Plot” Was Planned Alongside Origins

David Gaider says Dragon Age’s world had a series-wide story plan, though Origins might have been a one-off. He has kept the planned final plot secret.

David Gaider says Dragon Age had an overarching story plan even though BioWare thought Dragon Age: Origins might be a one-off. The series’ world included plots that could anchor individual games and a larger thread Gaider understood but had not fully documented. He has not revealed the planned final plot.

What David Gaider said about Dragon Age’s “uber-plot”

In a Eurogamer interview quoted by PC Gamer, Dragon Age creator and former lead writer David Gaider described two layers to the world’s storytelling: plots that could work within a single game, and a broader plan connecting events across the setting.

“The way I created the world was to seed plots in various parts of the world that could be part of a game, a single game, and then there was the overall uber-plot, which I didn’t know for certain that we would ever get to but I had an understanding of how it all worked together.”

That distinction matters: Gaider described an overarching understanding of how the world’s plots fit together, not a fixed, fully scripted sequence of sequels. PC Gamer’s report quotes him saying, “By the time we released Dragon Age: Origins, we were basically sure that it was one and done,” while also noting that an overarching plan existed when the world was created. The reported expectation that Origins might stand alone does not mean Gaider had no larger story in mind.

How the plan was recorded during Inquisition

For a long time, much of the connective plan remained in Gaider’s head. He told Eurogamer, as quoted by PC Gamer, that he had discussed and hinted at the ideas without explaining how everything connected. During development of Dragon Age: Inquisition, the other writers pressed him to lay out more of that material, and the team recorded it in a restricted master lore document. PC Gamer says senior writers were among those permitted to view it; the document’s contents have not been made public.

What Gaider has—and has not—revealed about the ending

Gaider has said he had “this dream of where it would all end,” but he did not disclose the final plot in the interview. PC Gamer reports that he declined to reveal the “very last plot” in case the series reached that point, describing it only as “the final thing you could do in this world that would break it.” The report does not establish what that event is, whether BioWare will use it, or whether the series is approaching an ending.

What the plan’s survival through The Veilguard means

PC Gamer reports that Gaider thought his concepts had “more or less held up” in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. That is Gaider’s retrospective assessment—not confirmation that every later plot point was decided before Origins, or that all current BioWare writers share his view of the series plan. The reported comments establish a connective story concept, not a guarantee that every intended detail will appear in a future game.
