Yes. Dragon Age: The Veilguard features Taash, a companion whose story includes coming out as nonbinary. The game’s creators confirmed that Taash’s pronouns shift from she/her to they/them during the story. The claim is specifically about the series’ first nonbinary character—not its first LGBTQ+ or transgender character.
Who is Taash in The Veilguard?
Taash is one of The Veilguard’s seven companions. Their character arc includes a coming-out storyline, which game director Corinne Busche and creative director John Epler described in an interview with WBUR. WBUR reports that Taash uses she/her pronouns earlier in the game and they/them later.
The change in pronouns helps explain why pre-release discussion was uncertain. In September 2024, Them noted that promotional materials generally avoided pronouns for Taash, while reporting both Busche’s use of they/them and an EA lore page’s reference to “her interests.” At that point, the character’s identity had not been confirmed as clearly as it was in the post-release interview.
What does “the series’ first” mean?
The distinction is nonbinary representation. Dragon Age: Inquisition had already introduced Krem, whom Them describes as the series’ first transgender character. Taash therefore should not be described as the franchise’s first transgender character or first LGBTQ+ character. The sources establish the narrower nonbinary claim; they do not provide a complete official accounting of every character across the franchise.

Who confirmed Taash’s storyline?
In the WBUR interview, Busche spoke about the importance of representation, saying, “I’m an openly queer trans woman — I really believe that representation matters.” The interview also reports her statement: “Everyone is welcome in ‘Dragon Age,’ and we want people to see themselves and feel like they can have a heroic place here.”

Electronic Arts announced a global launch on October 31, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The EA launch announcement also lists the game’s seven companions, including Taash.

BioWare’s June 2024 introduction to the game discussed its character creator and character-driven format, but did not announce Taash’s gender identity. The subsequent pre-release ambiguity and post-release confirmation are why dates and source context matter when describing the character’s arc.
