Its combat and party model change the feel of the series, but it does not attempt to reinvent BioWare storytelling. Whether that familiarity is welcome or limiting depends in part on what you want from a Dragon Age game.
This assessment reflects launch-period reviews, not a claim of universal consensus. Gizmodo reviewer Justin Carter wrote while 32 hours into the game and not yet near its ending.
Is Dragon Age: The Veilguard worth playing?
If you want a focused action RPG with an engaging companion cast and a clear sense of progression, Carter’s launch review makes a strong case for it. He praises the characters, companion quests, banter, and the way the game gives its locations a satisfying sense of discovery without making them feel daunting. His central qualification is just as important: The Veilguard is solid and assured, but its team-building and personal-quest structure feel recognizably BioWare rather than radically new.
That verdict is not shared in every detail. Windows Central also praises the characters and action combat, but criticizes aspects of the story’s reveals and pacing, as well as the more limited party control and exploration. The game’s focused design may feel brisk to one player and restrictive to another; the reviews offer different reactions rather than a single settled answer.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It released on October 31, 2024, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Gizmodo’s launch review and Windows Central’s review provide contrasting perspectives.
How does combat work in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
You directly control Rook, the player character, in action-oriented combat. Two companions accompany you, and you can open an ability wheel to choose their powers or direct them toward targets. Managing cooldowns and timing those orders adds a tactical layer, but the moment-to-moment fighting is centered on Rook rather than switching among party members.

That change makes combat more direct than in earlier entries for players accustomed to controlling more of the party. It also changes what “tactical” means here: you issue companion commands, but do not take over their characters. Windows Central regards that reduced control as a loss for players who valued party management in previous games; Carter’s review emphasizes the solid action combat.
Can you control your companions?
You can choose companion abilities and targets through the ability wheel, but you do not directly control companions as playable characters. You bring two companions on missions, so the party remains important even though Rook is the only character under direct player control.

Is The Veilguard like the other Dragon Age games?
In its broad story structure, yes. Rook recruits specialists, gets to know them through personal quests and conversations, and works toward a large threat. That recognizable loop—assemble a team, help its members resolve their problems, then face the larger conflict—is a major part of the game’s appeal in Carter’s review. He particularly praises the companions’ introductions, personal arcs, and banter. Harding’s expanded role and her conversations about her connection to the events of Inquisition stand out as emotionally effective moments.
The resemblance is not the same as a return to the older games’ exact play style. Combat shifts to direct action as Rook, and companions are commanded rather than controlled. The game’s narrative emphasis also gives its team and their personal stories substantial attention alongside the central threat and series lore. Windows Central likewise identifies the cast as a high point, while finding that some central-story reveals and pacing are less successful. A strong companion cast does not mean every part of the main plot lands equally well.

How does exploration compare with earlier games?
The reviews differ on whether the tighter locations are an advantage. Carter describes places such as Arlathan Forest and Treviso as substantial without being daunting; opening up areas and clearing threats gives his account a satisfying rhythm of discovery. Windows Central sees exploration as more constrained and linear, while noting that the more bounded design avoids some of the sprawl that could slow Inquisition.
For a player who likes focused regions and a clearer route through content, the design may help maintain momentum. Someone looking for broad spaces to wander or more open-ended exploration may find it limiting. These are critical reactions to the game’s structure, not a guarantee of how every player will experience its pacing.

What the familiarity means for the series
The Veilguard combines recognizable BioWare storytelling with a changed combat and party model. Its comfort zone is the companion-driven structure: meet a team, follow individual arcs, and prepare for a major confrontation. Its main departure is how combat is played, with Rook as the sole directly controlled character and companion powers issued as commands.
That makes “familiar” both praise and reservation. Carter’s review treats the return to a well-defined BioWare experience as overdue and welcomes the game’s focus. For players hoping the series would radically reinvent its formula—or who most value direct party control and expansive exploration—the same design choices may feel like limits rather than strengths.
