Sometimes. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) may help if dirt or residue is interfering with a controller’s analog stick, but it cannot restore worn components or repair damage. Use only a model-appropriate cleaning method, with very little liquid; pouring alcohol into a controller is not a safe universal fix.
When can isopropyl alcohol help stick drift?
An analog stick can register movement when you are not touching it because of contamination, wear, or component damage. If contamination is the cause, careful cleaning may help by removing residue from the relevant area. An external wipe may not reach it, and cleaning cannot rebuild worn resistive material. For those reasons, results are not guaranteed, and drift may persist or return.
iFixit’s joystick-cleaning guide describes using a small amount of contact cleaner or 90% or greater IPA, moving the stick, and allowing the liquid to dry. Its advice is a cleaning method, not proof that every controller can be fixed this way.
How to clean a stick safely
- Check the instructions for your exact controller. Cleaning guidance differs by model and by whether you are wiping the exterior or cleaning an internal component.
- Power off and disconnect the controller. Do not clean it while it is connected or powered on.
- Use minimal liquid and the right applicator. For the Xbox One procedure, iFixit recommends a foam-tipped or lint-free applicator lightly dampened with 90% IPA. Do not soak the controller; follow the Xbox One guide for its model-specific steps.
- Move the stick as directed and let everything dry completely. Do not reconnect or power on the controller until it is fully dry. iFixit cautions that substances other than the specified cleaner or IPA may be conductive.
These instructions do not establish one concentration or procedure for every controller. Do not pour liquid directly onto the product. Nintendo’s external cleaning guidance says to apply a consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol lightly to a soft cloth. That is for wiping surfaces, not an instruction for internal joystick repair; do not treat the two methods as interchangeable.

- DANGER: DO NOT USE AS FUEL SOURCE. If exposed to a heat source, vapors may ignite and cause the bottle to explode, resulting in severe burns, serious injury, or death
What to try if drift remains
| Option | When it may make sense | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Cautious cleaning | Contamination may be affecting the stick. | May not reach the problem or help if the component is worn or damaged. Liquid can damage electronics if used carelessly. |
| Adjusting the dead zone | You want to reduce how much small stick movement affects gameplay, if the game or console offers that setting. | This mitigates the symptom rather than repairing the stick. Availability and setting names vary; the cited repair guidance does not establish a universal setting. |
| Joystick-module repair or replacement | Drift persists or returns and wear or damage is suspected. | Procedures are model-specific and may require soldering. Use an exact-model repair guide or get help from a repair technician. |
For example, iFixit’s Nintendo Switch Joy-Con replacement guide covers a specific controller, not a universal replacement procedure. A DualSense joystick-replacement guide likewise applies to that controller. Check the guide and parts for your exact model before opening a controller or attempting soldering.

IPA is worth considering only when contamination may be contributing to drift and you can follow cleaning guidance for your exact controller. Use very little, avoid soaking, and wait until the device is fully dry. If the problem persists or comes back, cleaning may not address the cause; model-specific repair or replacement may be needed.
