Recommended Free Tools
For a straightforward starting point, use Vamp for Hero, Gadabout, and Monster Wrangler; Paragon for Warrior; Bat out of Hell for Martial Artist and Thief; and Genius for Mage, Priest, and Sage. Lone wolf is a balanced option for Merchant. These are recommendations for emphasizing useful stat growth—not fixed best-in-class rankings. Your party plan and a character’s eventual role can make another personality a better fit.
Best personality for each vocation
The table gives a practical default and one alternative emphasis. Choose based on what you want the character to do; the game does not make a vocation’s personality a permanent, universal optimization.
| Vocation | Suggested default | Why it fits | Alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hero | Vamp | Broad growth suits an all-round protagonist. | Paragon for physical offense, or Tough Cookie for survival. |
| Warrior | Paragon | Its Strength emphasis supports physical damage. | Tough Cookie or Ironclad if durability matters more. |
| Martial Artist | Bat out of Hell | High Agility supports acting early. | Paragon for more Strength, with less Agility emphasis. |
| Mage | Genius | High Wisdom and above-average Agility support spell output and turn order. | Vamp for broader growth. |
| Priest | Genius | Wisdom supports spell performance and MP growth; Agility can help with turn order. | Tough Cookie for a sturdier support character. |
| Merchant | Lone wolf | A reasonable balanced, durable profile when you want more than one stat emphasized. | Paragon for physical attacks; Genius if you expect to lean on spells after a vocation change. |
| Gadabout | Vamp | A broad profile avoids narrowing an unpredictable, supporting role too much. | Lucky devil for Luck, or Bat out of Hell for speed. |
| Thief | Bat out of Hell | Its substantial Agility emphasis suits a speed-focused choice. | Vamp for broader growth, or Paragon for physical damage. |
| Sage | Genius | Wisdom is central to spell damage, healing, and MP growth. | Lone wolf for a more durable, rounded profile. |
| Monster Wrangler | Vamp | A balanced default suits a flexible physical or support role. | Paragon for Strength, or Bat out of Hell for Agility. |
These recommendations synthesize the remake’s personality modifiers and the stat roles described by RPG Site’s guide to how personalities work and the Dragon Quest Wiki’s remake personality reference. They are not an official ranking. A character’s intended endgame job, party composition, or plans for a later vocation change may justify a different choice.
What personality changes
In the remake, personality influences attribute growth as characters level up; it does not directly assign a fixed pool of points. The remake reference lists 46 personality types. A modifier of 140% means a stronger growth emphasis for that attribute than a 100% modifier—not a promise of a specific final stat total.

Four useful modifier examples
The remake-specific modifier table illustrates why the suggested defaults differ: Genius has 140% Wisdom and 120% Agility; Paragon has 130% Strength; Bat out of Hell has 140% Agility; and Vamp has 150% Luck alongside 110% in each of Strength, Resilience, Agility, Stamina, and Wisdom. These figures are growth modifiers, not direct guarantees of battle damage, survival, or turn order. Source: Dragon Quest Wiki’s remake personality reference.
How characters get a personality
Hero
The Hero’s personality is determined through the opening personality quiz and its scenario. That makes the opening sequence the relevant point to shape the protagonist’s profile.

Created recruits
Recruit creation follows a different process. Vocation- and sex-specific base attributes combine with random bonus stats, and the resulting distribution—including seed choices—informs the personality assignment. A recruit’s vocation alone does not fix their personality. For details on the quiz and recruitment process, see RPG Site’s personality guide and the remake personality reference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you change a personality later?
Yes. Books permanently change a character’s personality. Certain accessories change it only while equipped; removing the accessory restores the previous personality. This gives you a way to revise or try a different profile, but check an item’s in-game description for its specific effect before relying on it. RPG Site’s guide describes these two methods.
