Notorious Studios announced on March 4, 2026 that it would stop selling the game on Steam and take it offline after March 31. Before that shutdown, Eldegarde offered a distinctive mix of fantasy-class combat, extraction runs, PvE, arenas, and MMO-like progression. The studio said it hoped to explore an offline version, but warned that this was uncertain and not a promise.
What was Eldegarde?
Eldegarde was a third-person action PvPvE RPG for PC, released in Early Access on Steam. Its “mini-MMO” identity came from combining short, high-stakes runs with familiar RPG systems: six playable classes, quests, crafting, vendors, and a personal hub. It was not a conventional persistent-world MMO; its central activities were structured modes and expeditions. Steam’s game description presented it as a “mini-MMO Action RPG.”
Players could go alone or adventure in groups of up to three. The game listed five zones and up to 32 creature encounters, with three broad ways to play: safer PvE expeditions, extraction runs where other players could threaten a run, and arenas for direct PvP.
How did Eldegarde’s modes differ?

Steam’s description does not establish detailed matchmaking, reward balance, or mode-specific progression.

What did the RPG and hub progression add?
Eldegarde had six classes: Warrior, Rogue, Hunter, Priest, Wizard, and Paladin. Its run-based structure was supported by systems outside a run, including crafting, vendor reputation and recipes, campaign and rotating quests, and a personal Lodge with functional furnishings. Steam listed 17 campaign questlines and more than 110 rotating daily and weekly quests.
That framework is why “mini-MMO” was more than a label for fantasy combat. Players had a home base and longer-term activities to pursue alongside individual expeditions. The developer said the game began as a fantasy extraction title and expanded during Early Access with arena PvP, a social hub, and a dedicated PvE-only mode. Those additions broadened its appeal, though they did not turn the game into an always-available, persistent-world MMO.

What did the January 2026 review find?
In an Insider Gaming review published January 28, 2026, Grant Taylor-Hill described Eldegarde as enjoyable and praised its combat, visuals, class variety, and depth of systems. The review discussed class-specific roles, the Lodge as an upgradeable hideout and crafting and storage area, as well as vendors, skill paths, traits, and varied quests. The reviewer disclosed receiving a copy for review; these are one critic’s judgments, not a consensus or controlled assessment.
The same review raised concerns about the small player base, the confusing rebrand from Legacy: Steel and Sorcery, and whether the available content could retain players and support continued development. Those concerns are particularly relevant to an online game that depends on a sustained audience, but the review did not establish a measured population figure or predict the eventual shutdown.

Steam’s page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026 showed 64% positive among 3,668 English-language reviews. That is a dated, changeable storefront snapshot—not a current measure of player activity or an explanation for why the game shut down. Individual Steam reviews also ranged from praise for an easy-to-enter game for a few rounds to complaints about balance or paying for an Early Access title; those comments are anecdotes and can refer to different builds.
Can you still play Eldegarde?
No—not as an online game. In its March 4, 2026 shutdown announcement, Notorious Studios said Eldegarde would no longer be sold on Steam and would remain online and playable until March 31, 2026. The studio then took the game offline indefinitely. As of October 8, 2026, the cited sources do not establish that servers remain available or that a playable offline build has been released.

The studio attributed the decision to insufficient traction to sustain it financially over the long term. It said it hoped to explore converting the game to an offline or client-side-server form, while explicitly warning that the work could take significant time or might never succeed. That possibility is not a confirmed product, service, or route to play.

As a game concept, Eldegarde brought together an appealing set of ingredients: class-based fantasy combat, extraction tension, lower-risk PvE, arenas, and hub-based progression. The January 2026 review found genuine strengths in its combat and systems, while also questioning its population and ability to keep players engaged. But for anyone deciding what to play now, availability is decisive: the online game has been taken offline, and the studio’s possible preservation effort remains uncertain.
