Producer Masaaki Hayasaka said the team’s core concept was “to change as little as possible from the original game.” The remake keeps recognizable foundations, but changes presentation, scale, content and play options, so “faithful” is best understood as a design aim rather than a claim of one-to-one equivalence.
What does “faithful” mean for this remake?
In a Xbox Wire interview, Hayasaka described two goals: preserve as much as possible, while carefully adjusting parts that felt difficult by modern standards. He noted that the game had mechanics players had loved for years as well as elements that felt dated when revisiting it. That is the developers’ stated intent, not an independent verdict that every change succeeds or that the remake matches every earlier release exactly.

The evidence supports a remake that keeps the original’s recognizable structure while revising how it looks and plays. Square Enix’s announcements and interviews document additions and alterations, but do not provide a complete, version-by-version audit of every detail in the original releases.
What remains recognizable, and what changed?
| Area | What the official material establishes |
|---|---|
| Visual style | The remake rebuilds the presentation in HD-2D, combining pixel-art characters with 3D backgrounds. Hayasaka said the palette was kept similar to help the game feel recognizable to players of the original. PlayStation Blog interview |
| Towns and travel | Hayasaka said building layouts remained the same, while map scale and travel distances changed. The team weighed richer environments against content density and pacing. The interview does not quantify those changes. PlayStation Blog interview |
| Story and secrets | Square Enix announced additional narrative and new secrets; the PlayStation Blog interview also discusses additional narrative episodes. These are additions rather than a claim that the story is reproduced without changes. Square Enix announcement |
| Vocations and battles | The remake adds the Monster Wrangler vocation and Monster Arenas. Hayasaka described new features and convenience options as part of modernizing the play experience. Xbox Wire interview |
| Convenience features | Battle speed options, autosave and autobattle are among the play conveniences described by the producer. A later official update also lists a shortcut-button feature. Square Enix update notice |
Is it the same game with new graphics?
No. The HD-2D treatment is a major visual change, but the differences go beyond graphics: there is additional narrative, new secrets, the Monster Wrangler vocation, Monster Arenas and modern play conveniences. Conversely, the producer’s comments about preserving building layouts and a familiar palette point to continuity in some parts of the experience. The available official sources do not establish that every map, encounter, system or story detail is identical to a particular original edition.
