REDSEC is free to play without buying Battlefield 6, though EA requires an EA account and a persistent internet connection.
What the 2024 report said
The original headline came from an Insider Gaming exclusive published February 27, 2024. Tom Henderson reported that Ripple Effect was working on a free-to-play battle royale experience connected to the next premium Battlefield game, then expected to arrive in October 2025. Those were reported plans, not an announcement from EA. Insider Gaming’s report described two planned modes:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
EA Import-Region Battlefield 2042 Game for PlayStation 4 | $17.96 | Buy on Amazon |
| 2 |
|
Battlefield 2042 (Xbox Series X) | $8.93 | Buy on Amazon |
| 3 |
|
Battlefield 2042 - PlayStation 4 | $14.97 | Buy on Amazon |
| 4 |
|
Battlefield 2042 - Steam PC [Online Game Code] | $59.99 | Buy on Amazon |
- Battle Royale: a classic battle royale experience.
- Gauntlet: a squad mode built around objectives, in which the lowest-scoring team would be eliminated after each mission.
EA’s later launch announcement confirms that REDSEC arrived, but it does not make every detail in the earlier report an official EA promise.
What EA launched as Battlefield REDSEC
EA announced Battlefield REDSEC’s launch alongside Battlefield 6’s first season on October 28, 2025. The announcement presented REDSEC as a free-to-play experience and listed Battle Royale, Gauntlet, and Portal among its launch offerings. REDSEC or the full Battlefield 6?
| What you want | What to choose | Cost and access |
|---|---|---|
| Battlefield battle royale and its free-to-play offerings | Battlefield REDSEC | Free to play; no Battlefield 6 purchase required. EA account and persistent internet connection required. |
| The complete premium Battlefield 6 game | Battlefield 6 | Optional retail purchase; EA does not require it for REDSEC. |
EA’s current Battlefield page continues to present REDSEC as a free-to-play Battlefield 6 offering and describes Battle Royale and Portal. That confirms EA’s current framing, but does not establish player population, future service duration, or availability in every territory.
