The report said the changes were intended to focus the studio on Squadron 42 and Star Citizen 1.0 deadlines; some employees, it added, believed cost savings were the main motive. Neither account establishes a complete public roster of those affected or a definitive explanation for every change.
What changed at Cloud Imperium Games?
In its December 20, 2024 exclusive, Insider Gaming said anonymous sources described at least three executives as having their positions terminated, while other senior staff were moved into different roles. The report estimated that the executives had about 25 years of combined experience at CIG. It did not identify everyone affected or specify every position involved, so the account should not be treated as a full organizational chart.
The changes reportedly began earlier that December, after founder Chris Roberts’s annual Letter from the Chairman. Insider Gaming also reported that CIG had let staff go in late November, with quality assurance (QA) prominently affected, as part of a restructuring. It gave no total for those earlier reductions.
What reason did CIG give for the changes?
Insider Gaming reproduced an internal announcement attributed to Roberts, rather than a company transcript independently available in the sources covered here. The announcement framed the changes as a way to focus the studio on its games and deadlines:

“To achieve this laser focus [of meeting the release of SQ42 and Star Citizen 1.0], it is more important than ever to ensure we have high-performing and efficient teams working throughout the company.”
The quoted message also said Roberts had made changes “from the very top of the company and downwards” to put the right people in the right roles and have staff work in person as much as possible. The stated rationale was therefore deadline focus and team structure—not a disclosed list of specific performance issues or a detailed public plan for the reorganization.

Was the shake-up about cost cutting?
Insider Gaming reported that some employees believed the changes were primarily intended to save costs. That is an employee interpretation attributed to unnamed sources, not a confirmed company explanation. The report also mentioned rumors that Sandi Gardiner might return in a more prominent role; it did not establish that as a plan. It said Gardiner left CIG in May 2019 and remained on the company’s board.
The two explanations have different evidentiary status: the deadline-focus rationale appeared in a message attributed to Roberts, while the cost-cutting interpretation and Gardiner speculation were reported as employee belief and rumor. The available account does not settle the private motivations behind each personnel decision.

How did the game deadlines change after the 2024 story?
At the time of the shake-up report, Squadron 42 was expected in 2026. A December 23, 2024 summary by Game World Observer said CIG’s annual message presented 2025 as a year focused on improving playability and described the game as expected in 2026. It quoted Roberts describing a “clear destination” for Squadron 42 and the Star Citizen 1.0 roadmap.
That target later changed. In an August 27, 2026 report, GameFlash said Roberts moved Squadron 42 from the 2026 window to Q2 2027, citing a wish to avoid the attention around Grand Theft Auto VI. The report said CIG had previously considered Q4 2026. GameFlash linked to an official RSI Letter from the Chairman, but its text was not readable in the materials available for this account; the revised window and explanation are therefore attributed to GameFlash, not independently confirmed here from that letter.

The later reported delay does not prove the 2024 reorganization failed or that it caused the schedule change. It does show that the deadline context invoked in the shake-up story was not a guarantee of a 2026 release.
