Ubisoft ended new downloads, registrations, and purchases on December 3, 2024, then shut down the game’s online services in June 2025. Ubisoft said it discontinued development because the free-to-play shooter had not attracted and retained enough players over time to justify further significant investment.
Why did Ubisoft shut down XDefiant?
Ubisoft’s stated reason was that XDefiant did not retain enough players over the long term to compete at the level the company wanted in the demanding free-to-play first-person-shooter market. The company said the game was too far from the results needed to justify further significant investment. That is Ubisoft’s explanation; its public statements do not provide a detailed breakdown of player trends, revenue, development costs, or the effect of particular design or operational decisions. Ubisoft’s December 3, 2024 announcement and its December 4 investor release describe that rationale.
Ubisoft also said development of games-as-a-service titles remained part of its strategy, pointing to Rainbow Six, The Crew, and For Honor as successful live titles. XDefiant’s cancellation was not an announcement that Ubisoft was abandoning all live-service games.

Can you still play XDefiant?
No. Ubisoft Help lists XDefiant’s online services as decommissioned. Because the game’s services have ended, installing it or owning a previous copy does not restore access to online play. Ubisoft stopped new downloads, registrations, and purchases on December 3, 2024, before the final service shutdown.
Does XDefiant have an offline mode?
Official Ubisoft information reviewed here does not confirm a playable offline mode for XDefiant. Ubisoft Help says generally that offline features of certain listed legacy games are unaffected, but its XDefiant entry only records the shutdown of online services; it does not document offline play. That general notice is not evidence that XDefiant can be played offline.
