What happened at Eidos-Montréal?
There are three distinct developments, and they should not be conflated: a reported cancellation of a Legacy of Kain project several years earlier; December 2025 reporting about staff departures and expected further reductions; and a studio-announced workforce reduction in March 2026.

Was Eidos-Montréal making a Legacy of Kain reboot?
According to Insider Gaming’s December 3, 2025 report, yes. The outlet said former Eidos-Montréal employees’ CVs indicated work on a dark-fantasy action RPG intended to revive an established vampire series, and that sources identified it as a Legacy of Kain soft reboot, internally codenamed P16. The project was not publicly announced in the sources covered here, and neither the studio nor its parent company officially confirmed it.
Insider Gaming reported that development lasted around a year and that the project was cancelled after Embracer acquired Eidos-Montréal. Sources told the outlet that some barebones gameplay existed. Those details, including the codename and cancellation timing, remain reported information rather than an official project history.

Was the Legacy of Kain cancellation part of the layoffs?
Insider Gaming said the cancellation happened years before its December 2025 report and was not part of the layoffs then being discussed. Tom Henderson wrote in that report: “To make it clear, the current set of cancelled projects circulating around is years old and is not a part of the current layoffs.” That is the reporter’s clarification, not a statement from Eidos-Montréal.
The later March 2026 reduction is a separate event. Eidos-Montréal attributed it to changing project needs and effects across production and support teams. The available reporting does not establish that the old Legacy of Kain cancellation caused either the December 2025 departures or the March 2026 reduction.

What did Eidos-Montréal announce in March 2026?
The studio’s explanation, as reproduced by Insider Gaming, was: “The reduction in workforce affecting 124 employees is a result of changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams.” Eidos-Montréal also announced that studio head David Anfossi was leaving and that a transition plan was underway. The studio did not attribute the workforce reduction to the reported Legacy of Kain project.

Embracer’s May 2, 2022 acquisition announcement listed Legacy of Kain among the franchises acquired. It also described Eidos-Montréal as having almost 500 employees across Montréal, Sherbrooke and Shanghai at that time; that is a historical figure, not a current headcount. Embracer Group’s acquisition announcement is the basis for that context.

Insider Gaming reported that the IP returned to Crystal Dynamics after the project’s cancellation, but this detail was not officially confirmed in the sources available here. Its report also said it was unknown whether Crystal Dynamics subsequently did further work on the franchise. The acquisition announcement alone does not establish current ownership arrangements or future plans.
