War Thunder has a native client for 64-bit Linux. You can install it either with Gaijin’s Linux launcher—download the archive, extract it, and run the file named run—or through Steam. Both routes are documented by Gaijin’s official War Thunder FAQ.
Choose a Linux installation route

Gaijin documents both routes in its FAQ, and Steam identifies the game as supporting SteamOS + Linux on its store listing. The available official pages do not establish account continuity for every combination of Steam and Gaijin accounts; check the current account-linking instructions for your situation before choosing a route.
Install with Gaijin’s Linux launcher
- Open Gaijin’s War Thunder FAQ and follow its Linux download link. The archive is identified there by the pattern
wt_launcher_linux_x.x.x.x.tar.gz; the version numbers in the actual filename can change. - Extract the downloaded archive into the directory where you want the game installed.
- Open the extracted directory and run the file named
run. The launcher opens and manages the game client. - Keep broadband internet available. Gaijin says a permanent internet connection is required to play.
Check Linux requirements and disk space
Gaijin’s FAQ lists the following Linux specifications. These are the requirements published on that page; check it again before installing because client details can change.

Steam’s store listing instead shows 70 GB minimum and 95 GB recommended storage. Those figures are not interchangeable with Gaijin’s minimal- and full-client estimates. Confirm the live requirement for the installation route and client size you plan to use, and leave additional free space for updates.

If the launcher or game will not start
Gaijin recommends recent proprietary graphics drivers for Linux. Its FAQ also gives this safe-mode command for a client that fails because of invalid settings:
./aces -safe -mode:windowed -resolution:1280x720
Run it from the directory containing the game client executable. It is troubleshooting guidance, not a guaranteed fix; if the problem persists, consult Gaijin’s installation and uninstallation support page.

Cost and connection
War Thunder is free to download and play without a subscription fee, but it is not an offline game: Gaijin requires a permanent internet connection to play. A gamepad or joystick is optional; neither is needed to download or install the Linux client.
