Square Enix says it streamlined the story and rebuilt major parts of the game; its official material does not give a comparable total-playtime figure for the remake and the original. The case for this version rests on its stated pacing and gameplay changes—not a proven 50 percent cut.
What makes Reimagined different from the original?
DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is a full remake of DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, which first released on PlayStation in 2000. It is more than an HD remaster: Square Enix says the team reconstructed the scenario, battles, side quests, and systems, alongside a new handcrafted 3D diorama-style presentation. The adventure follows the party from Estard into the past, where they discover lands sealed away from the present. Square Enix’s game page and its announcement describe the remake’s scope.

A more flexible battle system
The announced changes include vocation-specific perks, battle-speed adjustments, and auto-battle. Moonlighting lets a character have two vocations at once, drawing on both sets of skills, spells, and perks. These options give players more ways to shape and speed up encounters than the original’s basic presentation alone could offer; they are part of a wider systems overhaul, rather than just visual upgrades. Square Enix’s announcement lists these features.
Is Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined shorter than the original?
Square Enix explicitly calls the remake’s story streamlined, and the producer has acknowledged how slowly the original begins. In a Square Enix interview, producer Takeshi Ichikawa said the PlayStation game is “a very, very long game” and that “it’s about three hours before you get into the first battle.” He also said the team decided to adjust the story.

That quote describes the original’s opening, not the full completion time of either game. The official material does not provide matched estimates for finishing the original and Reimagined, so it cannot establish that the remake takes half as long. “More streamlined” is supported; “50 percent shorter” is not.
How long is Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined?
There is no verified official total-playtime figure for Reimagined in the cited Square Enix material. Your time will also depend on how much optional content you play and how quickly you move through battles and dialogue. The available evidence supports saying that the story and systems were reworked for a more approachable experience, but not assigning the game a specific number of hours or a precise reduction from the original.

Is this the best version of Dragon Quest VII?
“Best” is a judgment, not a publisher-certified ranking. Reimagined makes a strong case for newcomers who want a fresh presentation, a revised scenario, and battle options intended to make a long RPG easier to get into. Players who specifically want the original PlayStation experience should not mistake it for a faithful upscaling: Square Enix describes substantial changes to the game’s content and systems.
Its strongest claim is approachability, not proven brevity. If your main concern is avoiding the original’s slow opening, the producer’s comments and the remake’s stated streamlining address that concern. If you need to know whether it cuts total playtime in half, the official evidence does not answer that.

Which version should you buy?
The game launched February 5, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store on Windows; Steam followed on February 6. Square Enix’s official game page currently marks it available. Choose based on the hardware you own, whether you want a physical copy, and whether offline play or save continuity matters.
Switch or Switch 2
Square Enix says the Switch and Switch 2 editions have the same story and game content, but different graphics. They are separate purchases: there is no upgrade path, and saves do not transfer between the two editions. The Switch version runs on Switch 2; the Switch 2 version does not run on the original Switch. Check the official FAQ before buying if you may change consoles.

Physical copies and offline play
Physical editions are available for Switch, Switch 2, and PS5. The Switch 2 physical edition is a game-key card, not a complete game stored on the card: an internet connection is required on first launch, and the download needs at least 7 GB of free space. Physical Switch and PS5 copies can be played offline, though updates, bonus items, and DLC require internet. Square Enix says Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store editions are not physical. Carrying over demo progress
Demo save data can carry into the full game on the same platform, whether the full version is physical or digital. It cannot transfer across platforms, according to the official FAQ.
