E3 Is Officially Over—and the Industry It Was Built For Has Changed

The ESA ended E3 in December 2023 after years of disruption and a canceled comeback. Its closure reflects a broader shift toward direct digital showcases and a less centralized games industry.

Yes. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) ended E3 in December 2023; the event is not simply on hiatus awaiting a scheduled return. E3 had brought publishers, retailers, press and fans together around one annual showcase. As companies gained ways to reach audiences directly and the event lost major participants, that shared gathering became harder to sustain. COVID-19 disrupted E3, but it was not the only factor behind its end.

What E3 was—and why the industry built it

E3 began in Los Angeles in 1995 as a dedicated video game industry event. The ESA created it after games had been showcased within CES, giving the business its own venue. Retailers could meet publishers and creators, while the event also became a major platform for press coverage, product announcements and demonstrations. Over time, it acquired a fan-facing presence too.

That combination is what made E3 distinctive: one event could serve trade relationships, media attention, announcements and public excitement. Its importance depended on many parts of the industry choosing to gather at the same time and place.

Is E3 officially dead?

Yes. On December 12, 2023, the ESA announced that it had decided to end E3. The Associated Press reported the decision and quoted the organizer’s statement: “After more than two decades of serving as a central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industry, ESA has decided to end E3.” (Associated Press, December 12, 2023)

The decision followed several disrupted or abandoned editions. The last in-person E3 took place in 2019. The 2020 event was canceled during the pandemic; a virtual edition followed in 2021. In 2022, the ESA canceled both in-person and digital versions while saying it would work toward a physical and digital event the next year. That was a plan, not an event that ultimately took place. The planned 2023 comeback was canceled in March after the ESA and partner ReedPop said it had not attracted enough sustained interest to execute as intended. The ESA then ended E3 permanently in December.

Why was E3 canceled?

There is no single, established cause. Reporting points to several changes that weakened the reasons for publishers and other participants to depend on one annual trade show.

Publishers could reach audiences directly

Companies increasingly used downloadable demos, online video and their own digital presentations to show games without relying on an E3 press conference. Publisher-run showcases could reach fans without the same need for a convention booth, travel or a fixed event deadline. ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis put it this way in an interview with The Washington Post: “Companies now have access to consumers and to business relations through a variety of means, including their own individual showcases.” (The Washington Post, December 12, 2023)

Major participants pulled back

By the time E3’s planned 2023 return was canceled, the three major console makers had said they would not attend, and other publishers had also withdrawn, according to contemporaneous reporting. When prominent companies could announce games elsewhere, the event had less of the all-industry draw that once helped make it valuable.

The trade-show model lost some of its leverage

E3 was built partly around publishers meeting retail buyers and coordinating attention around a concentrated annual showcase. Digital distribution and changing release patterns reduced the need for a single summer event tied to a retail cycle. Ars Technica’s analysis also points to the expense and logistics of large convention booths; it does not provide a quantified cost study, so there is no sound basis for assigning a specific price tag to the decline. (Ars Technica, December 12, 2023)

The pandemic interrupted an already changing event

COVID-19 forced the 2020 cancellation and was a major disruption to E3’s attempts to return. But publisher departures and changes in how companies presented games were also underway beyond that interruption. Treating the pandemic as the sole reason E3 ended overlooks those longer-running shifts.

What replaced E3?

No single event has been established as E3’s full successor. Digital showcases, Summer Game Fest, PAX and regional expos each cover parts of the old event’s role, but the available reporting does not show that any one of them combines E3’s trade meetings, press access, major announcements, demos and fan-facing activities in the same way.

Option Format Role it can serve What it does not establish
Publisher digital showcases Online presentations and related digital releases Direct announcements and communication with fans A shared industry trade floor or a single gathering for all publishers
Summer Game Fest Showcase programming and related events A seasonal venue for announcements and game coverage Official status as E3’s successor or a replacement for E3’s entire mix of functions
PAX and regional expos In-person events Some media, demo and fan-access experiences The same industry-wide trade and announcement role E3 once combined

These are partial alternatives, not interchangeable versions of the old event. The most useful way to compare them is by asking who they serve—industry, press or fans—and whether their main purpose is announcements, business meetings, playable demos or public access.

How E3’s end changes the way games are announced

E3’s closure reflects a change in how the industry coordinates attention, not the end of game announcements or conventions. A publisher can now choose its own timing and presentation rather than making a reveal as part of one annual event. That gives companies more control over their message, while audiences encounter announcements spread across separate showcases and dates instead of concentrated around one convention.

For viewers, the practical trade-off is fragmentation: there is no longer one E3 schedule that reliably gathers the industry’s biggest presentations. For the business, the old model’s value depended on bringing many participants together; when they could reach fans and partners through other channels, the case for that single shared venue weakened.

The ESA’s 2022 announcement captures the difference between a hoped-for revival and what followed: it said there would be no digital E3 that year and promised a “revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer.” The planned return was later canceled, and the ESA’s December 2023 decision brought the event to an end.
