You can get Don’t Starve Together for Ubuntu through Steam. Steam lists the game for SteamOS + Linux, and Klei’s support page specifies Ubuntu 12.10 or newer as its Linux minimum. Before installing, compare your system with Klei’s published minimum requirements; meeting them does not guarantee compatibility with every Ubuntu release, graphics driver, or computer.
Download the game through Steam
- Open the official Steam store listing for Don’t Starve Together and confirm that it identifies SteamOS + Linux support.
- Use Steam to obtain the game. Once it is in your Steam account, open the Steam client on Ubuntu and find the game in your Library to begin downloading it.
The official sources establish Steam as the storefront and provide Linux requirements, but do not document client-installation steps for each Ubuntu release. For Ubuntu-specific Steam client setup, use Steam’s current instructions rather than relying on a command that may not fit your release.
Check the published Linux requirements
Klei Entertainment’s system requirements page, updated July 25, 2025, lists the following minimums for Linux:

These are minimum requirements, not recommended specifications or a compatibility guarantee. Klei specifically says it cannot support graphics cards with “GMA” in the model number or less than 256 MB of dedicated memory. The page also notes known issues with Intel integrated chipsets, so a system that meets the listed CPU and RAM figures may still have a graphics-related problem.

If the game will not install or run
- Check the graphics first. Compare the GPU model and its dedicated memory with Klei’s stated graphics floor. A generic driver utility or accessory cannot be assumed to make an unsupported graphics configuration compatible.
- Check free storage and network access. Klei lists 3 GB available storage and broadband internet as minimums for the client.
- Keep the Ubuntu claim narrow. Klei names Ubuntu 12.10 or newer, but that wording does not certify every later release, driver combination, or machine.
Hosting a server requires more headroom
If you plan to host a Don’t Starve Together server as well as play, Klei cautions that the hosting system needs to surpass the requirements listed for the game client. The client minimums above should not be treated as sufficient hosting specifications.
