You can download The Sims 4’s free base game on Windows through the EA app, Steam, or Epic Games. The free offer covers the base game, not every expansion, pack, or kit. Whichever PC storefront you choose, EA says its app is required to play EA games on PC, including games launched through Steam or Epic.
What is free—and what you need to download
EA made The Sims 4 base game free to new players starting October 18, 2022. That announcement refers to the base game; packs and kits are separate content, not included in the free offer. See EA’s free-to-play announcement.
EA lists three Windows PC storefront routes: the EA app, Steam, and Epic Games. Choose the one that best fits the account or storefront you already use. EA does not establish a meaningful difference in the base game’s free price between these routes. The EA app is still required to play EA games on PC, even when launching a game through Steam or Epic, according to EA’s EA app page.
How to download The Sims 4 on Windows
- Check compatibility and available storage. Compare your PC with EA’s requirements below and make sure the drive has enough free space.
- Choose a PC storefront. Use the EA app, Steam, or Epic Games, as listed by EA’s platform and installation guidance.
- Sign in or create an account for the storefront you selected, then find The Sims 4 base game and select its free download or install option. Storefront labels can change, so follow the current prompts shown there.
- Install and launch the game. If you selected Steam or Epic, expect to use the EA app as well: EA states that it is required to play EA games on PC.
- Connect to the internet for activation. EA lists internet access as required for activation.
Windows system requirements
EA’s published specifications distinguish minimum and recommended hardware. These are product requirements, not independent performance-test results. The figures below come from EA Help’s PC requirements page, which was reported as updated about five months before its 2026 review; check EA’s current requirements page before installing in case they have changed.

Do not confuse game requirements with EA app support
The game’s published Windows requirements list 64-bit Windows 10. Separately, EA says the EA app supports 64-bit PCs running Windows 10 or Windows 11. These describe different things: the game’s listed operating-system requirement and the launcher’s supported operating systems. EA’s app support details are on its EA app page.

Before you install
- Confirm that the Windows installation is 64-bit and that your processor, memory, graphics, and available storage meet EA’s current specifications.
- Plan for the extra 1 GB EA lists for custom content and saves, in addition to the game’s stated disk-space figure.
- Use an official PC storefront route. Console versions exist, but their download steps are not interchangeable with Windows PC installation.
