To install a downloaded The Sims 4 save on PC or Mac, back up your current saves, check the creator’s requirements, then place the save file in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > saves. Any included household or lot library files and custom content belong in separate folders—not in saves. This manual workflow does not apply to console; EA says saves and creations are platform-specific and non-transferable.
Choose a save that matches your game
Creator saves can rebuild a world, populate it with households, or provide a different starting point. Their requirements vary: current CurseForge listings include an example labeled base game and no custom content, while another says it requires all current expansion packs. Listings also vary in language and may specify game-version or custom-content requirements. These are examples, not guarantees of compatibility or endorsements; check the current project page and creator notes before downloading. CurseForge’s Sims 4 Save Files catalog is one place to browse.
- Packs: Check which expansion, game, or stuff packs are required. Missing packs may affect how a save appears or functions.
- Custom content (CC): Find out whether CC is required, included, or optional, and follow the creator’s installation notes.
- Game version and language: Check any version or language details the creator provides.
- Scope: Confirm whether the download changes a particular world, includes households or lots, or covers a broader population.
If you want to minimize dependencies, a listing explicitly marked base-game and no-CC is a sensible place to start. That label is a useful selection guide, not independent proof that the save works with your installation.
Back up your existing saves first
Copy your current saves folder somewhere safe before adding or replacing files. EA’s backup and reset guidance explains how to back up the Sims 4 folder and restore saves individually if you need to troubleshoot. EA Help: Backing up and resetting The Sims 4.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers
- Escape to Forgotten Hollow
- Live the Immortal Life
A backup gives you a way back if you overwrite a save, choose a file that causes loading trouble, or want to return to your existing game. Keep the copy outside the live saves folder so the game does not treat it as an active save.
Install the downloaded files in the right folders
- Read the creator’s download instructions. Extract the archive if necessary, then identify which files are save data and whether the download separately includes household or lot library files or CC.
- Open the user saves folder. On PC or Mac, go to
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > saves. EA documents this location for manual save transfer. EA’s The Sims 4 FAQ. - Copy the save data into
saves. Do not put the entire archive there if it contains other file types. Keep your backup separate. - Sort any other included files by type. Applicable Sim and lot library files go in
Tray;.packageCC files go inMods. Follow the creator’s instructions for any bundled content. EA forum guidance describes the distinction between these folders, but a save may not include either type of extra. EA Forums: How to Use Mods and CC. - Launch the game and check the save. Look for it in the game’s load menu. If the creator supplied separate households or lots, check the relevant library as well; follow the creator’s notes if something is missing.
A save file is game-state data; it is not itself a mod. Keeping the files in their correct folders matters: putting save data in Mods or Tray will not install it as a save.

Troubleshoot a save that will not load
If the game stops loading after you add a save, use your backup to isolate the problem rather than restoring everything at once. EA recommends copying saves back one at a time to identify a troublesome file. If adding a particular backup save makes the game fail to load, EA’s instructions say that recently added file is the cause and explain how to remove it from both the live and backup folders. EA’s backup and reset guide.
- Confirm the save data is in the user
savesfolder, notModsorTray. - Recheck pack, CC, language, and game-version notes on the creator’s page.
- Temporarily move the newly added save out of the live folder and see whether the game loads again.
- Restore saves individually from your backup to identify whether one file is responsible.
Do not delete your backup while troubleshooting; preserve a known-good copy until you have confirmed the game and save load as expected.

- Rule your story: Build a powerful Dynasty, shape shared Values, choose an Heir, or exile family members in a deep life simulation driven by legacy, prestige, and choice.
- Claim the crown: Rise through Nobility by winning the people, pleasing rival Nobles, dueling with swords, or exposing Scandals that can change the balance of power.

Transfer saves between PC and Mac
EA documents manual transfer between computers: copy the entire saves directory to a flash drive or other portable storage, then copy it into the matching The Sims 4 folder on the destination computer. If a saves folder already exists there, EA says it may need to be renamed or removed; make a separate backup before replacing it so destination saves are not lost. This is a manual PC/Mac workflow, not evidence that saves sync through EA cloud storage. EA’s transfer instructions.
Console players cannot use this save-file workflow
EA states: “Save files and creations are specific to the platform they were originally created on and are non-transferable.” The statement rules out transferring a PC or Mac save to console; it does not negate EA’s documented manual PC-to-Mac copying instructions. EA also says Mods and CC are unsupported on Xbox and PlayStation. EA’s platform FAQ.
