It is a promising fit for players who enjoy a sprawling, story-led adventure; the faster options smooth out combat, but they do not make the journey short. This review draws on Square Enix’s official feature and platform information and TechRadar’s review of the Nintendo Switch 2 version, not independent playtesting.
What is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined about?
The adventure begins on Estard, a small island kingdom. The young hero and childhood friends search for answers, discover the Shrine of Mysteries, and find themselves traveling into the past. There, they learn that entire lands have been sealed away by a malevolent force. Their quest is to restore those lands and uncover what lies beyond their home.
Square Enix frames the story as a journey across past and present, built from individual vignettes that contribute to a larger narrative. That structure gives the remake room to explore different places and their troubles while keeping the restoration of the world as its through line. The publisher’s official game page describes the story and its diorama-style presentation.
What changed in the remake?
A diorama-style world and streamlined story
The remake replaces a more traditional visual presentation with a diorama-inspired look: characters and environments are staged to feel like a detailed miniature world. Square Enix also describes the narrative as streamlined. Those changes aim to make the adventure feel more inviting without discarding its past-and-present premise or vignette-based structure.

- Classic Combat, Improved! - The battle system in DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has undergone significant changes. Turn the tides of battle with new vocational perks. Each vocation has its own unique ability, from all-out attacks to those that support your allies. Battle speed adjustments and an auto-battle feature are also available. Battles can progress without interruptions between each turn, depending on the tactics selected for the protagonist and allies. While on the field, players can pre-emptively strike monsters and instantly defeat them If the monster is weaker than the party.
More control over battle pace
The core remains turn-based combat, but the publisher lists adjustable battle speed and auto-battle among the options. Field attacks let the party strike weaker monsters while exploring and immediately defeat them when they are vulnerable to that feature. Together, these tools offer ways to spend less time on routine encounters; they do not remove the need to engage with tougher fights or the larger RPG systems.
Vocations and Moonlighting
Vocations shape each character’s battle role. The remake adds vocation-specific abilities, including perks, attacks, and support skills. Its Moonlighting system lets a character hold two vocations at once and use skills, spells, and perks from both. That creates more room to combine capabilities, though players who enjoy experimenting with party builds will likely get more from it than those who prefer to settle on one straightforward setup.

- Hand-Crafted Aesthetic - The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series Enhanced Story - While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames
These features are described by Square Enix on its official product listing. They expand the ways to manage encounters, rather than changing the game into an action RPG.
Is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined worth playing?
It is most compelling for players who want a substantial, traditional RPG: turn-based battles, a party to develop, and a long journey that unfolds through distinct stories. Returning fans may appreciate seeing the familiar premise recast with new visuals and revised systems. For newcomers, the premise is easy to grasp, and faster battles and field attacks can make routine play less demanding.

The key trade-off is scope. TechRadar’s February 2026 review of the Nintendo Switch 2 version describes progression and combat as faster and more accessible, but also cautions that the game remains lengthy. Streamlined storytelling and speed controls should be understood as ways to improve the flow of a long RPG—not a promise of a short experience. Read TechRadar’s review for the publication’s full assessment.
How accessible is it, and how does it run?
TechRadar reports that the game includes on-screen dialogue and colorblind modes. The reviewer also says they played the Switch 2 version in both docked and handheld modes and noticed no performance issues during their review. Those are TechRadar’s observations from its review, not an independent performance test or a guarantee for every platform, setup, or play session.
