EA introduced it as the first EA SPORTS FC release, with gameplay additions including HyperMotionV and PlayStyles; launch-period reviews differed on how much those changes mattered in practice. If you are deciding whether it is a meaningful leap from FIFA 23, the evidence points to an incremental update rather than a wholesale reinvention.
Is EA Sports FC 24 just FIFA with a new name?
In branding terms, FC 24 is a break: EA announced it as the first game under the EA SPORTS FC name and launched it worldwide on September 29, 2023. In structure, it retains the familiar annual football-simulation approach and established modes. A new identity does not, on its own, show that the underlying game was rebuilt.

EA described the launch as the beginning of a broader ambition for the brand, saying, “EA SPORTS FC 24 marks the start of our ambition to grow the love of football through our platform.” That is the publisher’s positioning, not an independent assessment of how different the game feels. What changed in FC 24?
EA’s gameplay notes highlight a set of technologies and mechanics, but an announced feature is not proof that it transforms the match experience.

- PlayStyles optimized by Opta: EA presented these as a way to represent player-specific strengths in gameplay.
- Frostbite improvements: EA also listed enhancements to the game’s engine.
- New gameplay actions: The official notes name Precision Pass, Effort Dribble, and Controlled Sprint.
These are concrete additions to the feature set. The launch reviews, however, describe their practical effect as modest or contestable rather than evidence of a radically new game. (EA gameplay deep dive)
What did launch reviews say about the changes?
Reviews from September and October 2023 offer different emphases, so there is no need to treat one verdict as a universal consensus.

- GameSpot: Richard Wakeling’s October 4 review called the experience largely business as usual and criticized recurring gameplay problems, Career mode, and Ultimate Team microtransactions. This is one reviewer’s launch-period judgment.
- The Guardian: Its September 28 review characterized FC 24 as a familiar, enjoyable football simulation. It noted the established selection of modes and highlighted Evolutions in Ultimate Team.
- Stuff: Its review, tested on PS5 and published October 19 (updated November 2), described subtle differences within a familiar annual game.
Read together, these reviews support a measured conclusion: FC 24 has identifiable new features, while its overall feel and the value of those features were not described as a dramatic break from the preceding formula. (GameSpot review; The Guardian review; Stuff review)
Are the modes and Ultimate Team different?
The familiar mode lineup remains part of the appeal for players returning to the series. The Guardian lists Kick-Off, Tournament, Player Career, Manager Career, Volta, and Ultimate Team. Its review also identifies Evolutions as a new Ultimate Team addition. Evolutions give that mode a new progression feature, but the cited coverage does not establish that they change the broader structure of Ultimate Team.

Career mode is a particular point of disagreement in how the game is evaluated: GameSpot criticized it as undercooked, while the available launch coverage does not provide a basis for claiming a major overhaul. Players mainly looking for a substantially deeper Career experience should not assume the rebrand signals one.

FC 24 expanded cross-play across selected multiplayer modes, but EA specified same-generation compatibility. Cross-play is therefore not unrestricted across every platform and mode.

- Same-generation support does not mean every mode supports cross-play; check the mode and platform combination you intend to use.

Is FC 24 worth buying if you already have FIFA 23?
That depends on what you want from an annual entry. FC 24 is easier to justify if you want the newest 2023 roster and presentation, intend to use its supported cross-play modes, or are interested in trying the new gameplay actions and Ultimate Team Evolutions. If your main hope is a substantially different match feel or a major Career mode redesign, the cited launch reviews do not make a strong case for that expectation.
