Its parkour, close-quarters combat and day-night danger make it a strong fit for players who enjoy the series’ movement and visceral action. The appeal is less certain for newcomers: TechRadar’s PC reviewer praised the exploration and combat but warned that some tutorials leave mechanics unclear. The March 2026 Restored Land update adds a separate, much harsher survival option, so it is worth distinguishing that mode from the base campaign.
What kind of game is Dying Light: The Beast?
Dying Light: The Beast is a standalone entry, not a downloadable expansion requiring an earlier game. Kyle Crane escapes years of captivity and experimentation by the Baron, and the resulting mix of human and zombie DNA gives him beastly powers that he must learn to control. The story unfolds in Castor Woods, a rural setting that replaces the denser urban environments associated with earlier entries. Techland’s official game page and FAQ cover the premise and standalone status.

The basic rhythm remains familiar: move through the world with first-person parkour, fight infected, scavenge, and weigh the risks of travelling after dark. The official game overview describes daytime as the time to explore and gather supplies; when night falls, stronger threats turn each trip into a choice to run, hide or fight. Castor Woods gives that loop a different landscape, while the beast abilities add a power fantasy to the survival-horror framework.
How do the movement, setting and combat hold up?
Movement and melee combat are the clearest reasons to play. TechRadar’s September 2025 PC review praised the parkour, close-quarters fighting and exploration, along with the fresh rural setting. Its assessment supports a useful distinction: the game changes the surroundings and adds Crane’s beastly side, but it is still built around the series’ open-world action rather than a wholly different genre or structure. The setting changes the feel of exploration, but the evidence here does not establish that Castor Woods makes every part of the open world more compelling than the earlier games’ urban environments. The strongest supported point is that TechRadar found the rural location a welcome fresh element and highlighted open exploration. Players who mainly want a new take on parkour and melee combat have a clearer reason to be interested than those expecting a radically new formula.
Is Dying Light: The Beast worth playing?
It is an appealing choice for players who want first-person parkour, brutal melee combat and the tension of deciding whether to venture out after dark. The beast power concept adds a counterpoint to the vulnerability of survival play, while the rural setting gives exploration a different backdrop. The game is standalone, so prior entries are not required to start.
For newcomers, onboarding is the main caution. TechRadar’s reviewer found that some bare-bones tutorials can leave a player without much series experience unsure about certain mechanics. That is a specific reviewer’s criticism, not proof that every new player will struggle, but it makes this a less effortless entry point than its standalone status alone might suggest.
Review scores are individual judgments rather than a single consensus. PC Gamer awarded the game 70 in its 2025 review, calling it a grittier survival-horror experience than Dying Light 2: Stay Human that still stumbles. GameSpot’s 2025 review listing shows a score of 8, but the listing does not provide enough review text to attribute a detailed rationale to that score. See PC Gamer’s review and GameSpot’s review listing for their respective judgments.

How long is the game?
Techland’s current FAQ describes Dying Light: The Beast as offering 40+ hours of survival-adventure gameplay. That is the publisher’s broad description, not a guaranteed completion time. PC Gamer reviewer Christopher Livingston reported spending about 35 hours on the main story in his own 2025 playthrough, with side quests and activities still left over. The figures cover different scopes: an official overall gameplay estimate and one reviewer’s main-story run, not a direct contradiction or a promise about every player’s pace. The official estimate appears in the Techland FAQ; the individual playtime report is in PC Gamer’s review.
Can you play co-op?
The standard experience supports solo play or co-op for up to four players total, with shared progression, according to Techland’s official FAQ and game overview. Restored Land is a distinct case: its design is described as solo-focused. Do not assume that the base campaign’s four-player option carries over to that survival variant.

Released March 26, 2026, Restored Land combines the base experience, previous updates and new content. Its defining change is persistence: defeated infected stay cleared and collected items do not respawn. Resources are limited, some activities can only be completed once, and players may opt into a One Life rule. Those changes make planning and avoiding unnecessary risk more consequential than in the standard loop. Techland describes the update as free for existing owners and included in editions offered to new players on its official site.
Level Infinite’s March 27, 2026 announcement counts 33 new quest encounters, seven achievements and five hidden stashes in the update. These are content counts, not measures of campaign length or quality. See the Restored Land announcement for the listed additions.

Which edition should you choose?
Techland lists Standard, Deluxe and Restored Land Definitive editions in its official FAQ. Deluxe adds the Castor Woods Prepper Bundle and digital extras including the soundtrack, wallpapers and a tourist map. Definitive includes four named packs: Action Hero Essentials, Hunter Essentials, Fire Lotus Pack and Discharge Pack.
The PlayStation US product page displayed these prices when accessed: $59.99 for Standard, $69.99 for Deluxe and $89.99 for Definitive. Those are time- and territory-specific storefront prices, not universal or guaranteed current prices. Compare the edition contents against the extras you actually want rather than treating the higher tiers as necessary to play the game.
Collectors also have a confirmed physical PS5 option. Techland names a Retail Version, Super Rare Games Edition and Anniversary Edition for the first-anniversary release on its official game site. This confirms the editions, but not current retailer stock or availability.
Verdict
Dying Light: The Beast is easiest to recommend to players who want more of the series’ parkour-and-combat core with a new rural setting and a beastly twist. It is a full standalone game with solo and shared-progression co-op in the standard experience; Restored Land offers a markedly more punishing, solo-focused alternative for players who want persistent consequences. Newcomers can start here, though the reported tutorial gaps may make some systems less immediately clear.
