EA has a clear business reason to keep selling extra content: its live-services business brings in billions, and EA says Ultimate Team content is material to the company. Players contribute to that incentive when they keep playing and spending. But the evidence supports only a qualified version of “that’s our fault”: it does not show that consumers alone determine EA’s strategy, that every live-services dollar comes from microtransactions, or that all players support the model.
What EA’s revenue figures show—and what they don’t
In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, EA reported $5.473 billion in “live services and other” net revenue for the trailing 12 months. That was close to the $5.476 billion reported for the comparable period two years earlier, after $5.433 billion in the intervening period. In the quarter itself, the category generated $1.472 billion, up 7% year over year. EA’s SEC filing defines live services as including extra content, subscription offerings and other revenue generated in addition to full-game and free-to-play game sales.

EA separately reported $4.170 billion in extra-content revenue for the trailing 12 months ended June 30, 2026. Extra content is a more relevant measure of add-on purchases, but EA does not identify that entire amount as microtransactions. Neither category should be treated as a precise total for microtransaction spending.
| EA revenue category | Trailing 12 months ended June 30, 2026 | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Live services and other | $5.473 billion | Extra content, subscriptions and other live-service revenue; not microtransactions alone. |
| Extra content | $4.170 billion | An EA-reported revenue category; the filing does not break out microtransactions as a separate total. |
| Digital full-game downloads | $1.708 billion | Full-game download revenue, reported separately. |
| Packaged goods | $440 million | Packaged-game revenue, reported separately. |
These figures show why it would be misleading to call every live-services dollar a microtransaction. They also show that add-on content is a substantial part of EA’s business. The company says live-services revenue from Ultimate Team extra content is material to its business, with a substantial portion derived from EA SPORTS FC Ultimate Team. In Ultimate Team, players collect current and former players to build and compete with a personalized team.

Why EA has a reason to keep investing in the model
Full-game sales can bring in revenue at launch, while a live game can continue generating revenue through add-on content, subscriptions and other offerings. EA’s filing describes these as distinct parts of its business rather than interchangeable forms of sales. That gives the company a financial incentive to maintain services that keep players returning and provide opportunities to buy additional content.
EA’s reported console sales mix also helps explain the broader shift toward digital distribution, though it is not a measure of microtransaction adoption. The company estimated that digital purchases accounted for 81% of its total units sold on specified Xbox and PlayStation consoles in fiscal 2026, compared with 78% in fiscal 2025 and 73% in fiscal 2024. These are unit-share estimates for those consoles—not revenue shares and not figures for all EA platforms.

How players help sustain the incentive
EA executives have described a connection between player activity and monetization. On the October 29, 2024 earnings call, Chairman and CEO Andrew Wilson said: “We’ve witnessed that when friends play together, we see deeper engagement for longer with a positive impact on monetization.” This is EA management’s account of the relationship, not independent evidence that every player spends or that social play causes each purchase.
On that same call, CFO and Executive Vice President Stuart Canfield said engagement and overall spend in EA’s American-football ecosystem more than doubled year over year during the quarter. His statement was about that ecosystem and that period, not all EA players or all of the company’s games. Together, the remarks make EA’s commercial logic explicit: sustained engagement and spending are valuable to the company.

EA’s May 6, 2025 FY25 results also said player monetization in EA SPORTS FC was up double digits beginning with the mid-January gameplay update. That is a company-reported claim about player monetization; it does not isolate microtransaction revenue or establish what caused the increase. EA’s FY25 results announcement does not make it a measure of every player’s behavior.

In a limited sense, yes: when players keep a live game active and spend on its extra content, they help make that service commercially valuable. EA’s own statements connect engagement and spending to monetization, and its financial filings show the scale of live services and extra content in its business.

But “players are to blame” would overstate what these sources establish. Revenue figures do not tell us why individuals buy, whether they approve of a particular design, or how many players spend nothing. Nor do the figures prove that consumer demand alone explains EA’s choices. The evidence supports shared commercial incentives—not a claim that all players want microtransactions or bear equal responsibility for their presence.
What to take away as a player
If you dislike a game’s monetization, your own spending is one decision you control; a company’s larger incentives are shaped by the activity and purchases of its player base, not any one person’s choice. It is also useful to distinguish buying a full game from spending on optional content inside it: EA reports those revenue streams separately, and its filings do not show that one automatically entails the other.
