Start by checking EA service status, then restart the game and network equipment, reduce competing network use, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. EA’s connection guidance focuses on ping, packet loss, and jitter—not download speed alone.
Why FC 25 can lag online on PS5
In an online match, button inputs travel as game-data packets from your home network to an FC game data center and back. Delays or interruptions along that route can make the game feel less responsive, cause visual stuttering, or lead to disconnections. The route includes your local network, your internet provider’s path, and EA’s game data centers. EA explains this connection path in its FC Connection Quality guide.

EA evaluates connection quality using three measurements:
- Ping: the round-trip time for game data to reach the FC data center and return.
- Packet loss: the number or percentage of packets that fail to complete that round trip.
- Jitter: changes in ping over time, which indicate how consistent the connection is.
A high download-speed result does not describe all three. A connection may have ample bandwidth but still feel inconsistent if latency varies or packets are lost. EA does not specify a universal internet-speed requirement or a single metric that explains every player’s lag.

Try these fixes in order
1. Check whether EA services are having trouble
Before changing your home setup, check the FC server-status information and EA’s official FC update channels. Service status can change, so check current information rather than assuming an outage is the cause.
2. Restart FC 25 and your network equipment
Close and restart the game. EA notes that this can help if you were matched to a different Game Data Center than usual. Restart your router as well; if your modem is a separate device, restart it too. Turn the equipment off, wait at least 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Follow your provider or manufacturer’s instructions if your equipment has a different restart procedure. EA’s connection troubleshooting guide covers these steps.

3. Reduce other network traffic during a match
Pause large downloads and, if possible, avoid HD or 4K streaming and other heavy shared-network use while playing. Then compare match responsiveness under similar conditions. This is a useful test of whether household network demand is contributing to the problem, not a guarantee that it is the only cause.
4. Test a wired Ethernet connection
If you can, connect the PS5 directly to your router with Ethernet and play under conditions similar to your Wi-Fi test. EA recommends wired play when connection quality is inconsistent because Wi-Fi is more exposed to interference. A Cat6 Ethernet cable can enable this test; using a cable may improve local stability, but it cannot correct lag caused by the internet provider’s route, EA services, or another point outside your home.

5. Improve Wi-Fi if Ethernet is not practical
Move the router closer to the PS5 or reduce obstacles between them so the console has a strong signal. If your router offers both bands, EA describes the trade-off this way: 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther but can be slower and more prone to higher ping or instability; 5 GHz is generally faster and more stable at shorter range. Which works better depends on distance, interference, and the equipment in your home.
In a crowded area, you can also test a less congested Wi-Fi channel if your router allows it. EA identifies channels 1, 6, and 11 as non-overlapping options for 2.4 GHz. Router menus and supported options vary, and the best channel depends on nearby networks.

6. Check advanced router settings only after the basic tests
EA recommends checking whether router firmware is current, disconnecting a VPN as a test, and using Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize FC traffic if your router supports it. Firmware updates and QoS settings differ by model, so consult the router manufacturer’s documentation before changing them. A router adjustment cannot guarantee a fix if the issue is elsewhere along the connection path.

When testing different setups, keep the comparison as consistent as possible: use the same location, similar household network load, and the same kind of online play. Compare ping, packet loss, jitter, and how responsive matches actually feel. If you must use Wi-Fi, compare available bands and router placement while accounting for 5 GHz’s shorter range. EA’s guidance does not establish a universal “good ping” cutoff, so avoid treating one number as a guaranteed pass or fail.

Separate connection lag from online-access or console checks
If you cannot access online play at all, confirm that your PlayStation subscription is active. EA’s broader connection troubleshooting guide also points to PlayStation Safe Mode guidance for clearing cache. These checks may be relevant to access or console troubleshooting, but EA does not present them as guaranteed fixes for in-match latency.
