If Dragon Age: The Veilguard is downloading, the most useful thing you can do is create Rook in the free standalone Character Creator. You can then import that character into the full game on the same platform, so you can spend download time customizing your protagonist instead of using time in-game. That’s useful advice for launch day—but the game launched on October 31, 2024, so the original preload schedule below is historical, not a guide to current download availability.
Make Rook in the standalone Character Creator
EA’s official Dragon Age: The Veilguard page describes a free, standalone character creator and says a Rook made there can be imported into the full game on the same platform. It’s the clearest game-specific way to use download time: shape your protagonist before starting the main game, then bring that character with you once the installation is ready.
BioWare Creative Director John Epler described the goal as giving players the choice to express themselves in a world of adventure and danger. The creator is a natural fit for that promise: take your time with Rook’s appearance and identity, rather than feeling rushed to start the story.
What the launch download schedule looked like
EA’s published preload schedule applied to the October 2024 launch, not to a fresh install today. At launch, console players could preload before release; PC players could not. EA explained that the PC version would not include third-party DRM. The announced platform dates and times were:

EA’s product page lists October 31, 2024 as the release date and gives 4 PM UTC as the release time. Those dates and times explain the original launch window; they do not establish the timing or status of a download in 2026. EA does not provide a typical download duration in the cited information, and your wait will depend on your connection, platform, and installed data.
Other useful ways to spend the wait
- Check that your platform has enough storage and that any required system updates are ready. These checks may help you avoid an installation interruption, but they will not make the download itself faster.
- Get a snack or take a break while the platform downloads the game; there is no need to keep restarting or changing settings without a specific error to address.
- Browse official information about Rook and the game’s companions if you want to plan your first run. The launch announcement describes Veilguard as a single-player RPG with seven companions.
Is the EA Play trial still a reason to make Rook first?
In a December 10, 2024 announcement, BioWare recommended creating Rook in advance of the EA Play trial because character creation time counted against its five-hour limit. That is historical trial information, not confirmation that the same offer or terms are available now. Check EA’s current EA Play terms before relying on a trial or its duration.

A related physical extra: the art book
If you want something to browse away from the screen, BioWare’s August 2024 announcement described The Art of Dragon Age: The Veilguard as a separate 256-page book and explicitly said it does not include the game. That is a launch-era product detail, not confirmation of current stock or price.
