The practical choice is not just which effect to add: check that it fits the item, that your filled soul gem is strong enough, and whether you want an always-active apparel effect or a weapon enchantment you will need to recharge.
Where to enchant gear
Bethesda’s original PC manual says spellmaking and enchanting access is tied to Mages Guild rank and places the enchanting altar in the Chironasium at the Arcane University in the Imperial City. That is the documented route for the original PC game, not confirmation that every access step is identical in Oblivion Remastered. Check your in-game quest and access requirements before making the trip.
What you need before using the altar
- An eligible item: choose equipment that can receive the effect you want. Not every item is a valid target.
- A filled soul gem with enough power: the original manual says gem size determines available charge; a weaker gem may not support the enchantment you want.
- A known, compatible effect: knowing a spell does not mean its effect can be applied to every equipment type.
- Enough gold: the original manual lists gold as a prerequisite for creating a custom enchantment.
These requirements are described in the original PC manual. The detailed source does not establish that every remaster interface label, cost, or balance value is unchanged.
How to make a custom enchantment
- Reach the enchanting altar and open its enchanting interface. The original manual locates it in the Chironasium at the Arcane University.
- Select an eligible item, then choose a filled soul gem with sufficient power.
- Choose one or more effects that you know and that the selected item can accept. If an effect or item is unavailable, check compatibility rather than assuming the game is bugged.
- Review the displayed cost and charge or uses before committing. The manual’s workflow and terminology are for the original PC game, so rely on the remaster’s own interface for its exact labels and values.
- Name and create the item if the interface offers those options.
The manual says a stronger selected soul gem allows more charge, and that constant-effect magnitudes are set to the maximum supported by the chosen gem. It does not provide a remaster-specific table of costs, magnitudes, or charge values.

Choose between always-on apparel and rechargeable weapons
The main upkeep trade-off is whether an enchantment is constant effect or activated through a weapon or staff. In the original manual, constant-effect armor and clothing do not need recharging. Weapons and staves consume power and must be recharged after it is depleted. That distinction makes apparel a natural home for persistent utility, while an enchanted weapon trades upkeep for combat effects when used.
Before spending a strong soul gem or gold, weigh the effect against the equipment slot and your build, then consider the gem investment and how much charge management you are willing to do. There is no universal best enchantment independent of those choices.

A practical utility effect: carry more
Bethesda Support says Feather or Fortify Strength spells and enchantments temporarily increase maximum encumbrance in Oblivion Remastered. That can help when you want to carry more, but treat it as a temporary boost rather than a permanent increase. The support guidance confirms this use in the remaster; it does not establish which item slots accept the effects or the exact magnitude available at an altar.

Bethesda describes Oblivion Remastered as a modernization of the 2006 game, but the detailed altar procedure and mechanics cited above come from the original PC manual. Bethesda Support’s encumbrance guidance is specifically about the remaster. For exact access progression, controls, compatibility, prices, or balance on your platform and patch, use the in-game interface or a remaster-specific official reference rather than assuming the original manual settles every detail.
