The “$500 million” figure was Bloomberg’s February 2024 report of a proposed Saber Interactive sale, not the final official price Embracer announced for selected Saber assets. Embracer later set a $247 million purchase price for those assets, including assumed earnout liabilities, with up to $94 million more possible under resale conditions. The sale closed in March 2024. As for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, Saber chief creative officer Tim Willits said in March 2026 that it was still in development, but gave no release date or further details.
What happened to the $500 million Saber sale?
Bloomberg reported on February 29, 2024, citing a person familiar with the transaction, that Embracer planned to sell Saber Interactive to private investors in a deal worth up to $500 million. The report also said development of the KOTOR remake would continue. That was a report about a proposed transaction at that time, not Embracer’s later official purchase-price terms.
On March 14, 2024, Embracer announced an agreement to divest selected assets from Saber’s operative group to Beacon Interactive, a company controlled by Saber co-founder Matthew Karch. Embracer stated a $247 million purchase price for those assets, including $44 million in assumed earnout liabilities. It also said up to $94 million in additional consideration could be payable if the buyer resold the assets for a higher consideration, subject to specified conditions and time periods. Embracer announced on March 28, 2024, that the transaction had completed. The completion notice does not establish that the conditional additional consideration was earned.
| Date and source | What was reported or announced | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|
| February 29, 2024 — Bloomberg | Up to $500 million for a proposed Saber sale | A reported proposal, attributed to a person familiar with the transaction; not the official later price for selected assets. |
| March 14, 2024 — Embracer | $247 million purchase price, including $44 million in assumed earnout liabilities | Official terms for selected assets from Saber’s operative group. |
| March 14, 2024 — Embracer | Up to $94 million in possible additional consideration | Conditional amount tied to a qualifying resale at higher consideration; not stated as a guaranteed payment. |
| March 28, 2024 — Embracer | Transaction completed | Embracer confirmed closing; this does not show that the possible additional consideration was paid. |
Embracer’s official announcement described a sale of selected assets, while Bloomberg’s earlier report described a proposed Saber sale. Those different scopes and stages are why the figures should not be combined or treated as competing statements of one final cash payment. Embracer’s March 14 announcement and its March 28 completion notice give the official terms and closing status. Bloomberg’s February 29 report is the source of the earlier proposed-sale figure.

Is the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake still in development?
According to TechRadar’s March 6, 2026 report, Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits said the remake was still in development. Asked about the project’s future, he replied: “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say.” He offered no further detail in that account, so the statement establishes neither a development schedule nor a release date. Read TechRadar’s report.

Embracer’s February 15, 2024 interim report listed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake for PC and PS5. Its project table identified the intellectual property as licensed, publishing as external, and main development as internal. These are details from a dated project slate, not an updated platform commitment or release announcement. Embracer’s interim report contains the listing.

The studio history helps explain why Saber appears in coverage of the game. Embracer’s 2021 acquisition announcement said Aspyr was acquired through Embracer’s wholly owned Saber subsidiary and would operate as a standalone entity under Saber. That background does not change the narrower scope of the 2024 divestment announcement. Embracer’s Aspyr announcement describes the arrangement.
