The choice shapes Rook’s backstory and conversation options, and BioWare says it can unlock narrative, dialogue, and gameplay interactions. Pick the group whose region, mission, and roleplaying identity best fit your Rook—not a supposed universal “best” faction.
What does a faction choice change?
EA says Rook’s faction affects their backstory and conversation options, and may affect the balance of power. BioWare describes faction choice as opening up narrative, dialogue, and gameplay interactions. It is therefore more than a cosmetic label, but the official descriptions do not establish a complete ranking of faction perks or story importance.

What are the six factions?
Grey Wardens: fight darkspawn and monsters
The Grey Wardens are an ancient order sworn to combat darkspawn and other monsters. Their secret rites grant supernatural powers. Choose this background if you want Rook’s identity tied to a long-standing martial order and a direct struggle against existential threats. Davrin is also a Grey Warden.

Veil Jumpers: explore Arlathan’s dangerous ruins
Veil Jumpers explore ancient elven ruins and confront the reality-warping magic of Arlathan Forest. Their work includes trying to stabilize the region as ancient magic and artifacts awaken. This suits a Rook whose story centers on exploration, elven history, and hazardous discoveries. Bellara belongs to the faction.
Shadow Dragons: resist corruption and slavery in Tevinter
The Shadow Dragons are a resistance group opposing corrupt rulers and slavery in Tevinter, and they lead resistance in Minrathous. Their background fits a politically engaged Rook fighting oppression from within one of Thedas’s most powerful societies. Neve is a member.

Lords of Fortune: seek treasure and adventure in Rivain
The Lords of Fortune are Rivaini explorers, hunters, and treasure-seekers known for daring exploits. If you picture Rook as an adventurous risk-taker drawn to discovery and the pursuit of valuable finds, this faction is a natural roleplaying match. Taash, a Qunari dragon hunter, is one of its members.
Mourn Watch: serve among Nevarra’s necromancers
The Mourn Watch is an elite order of necromancers that tends Nevarra’s Grand Necropolis, a place where undead walk and spirits dwell. Game director John Epler described the group as “an elite group of necromancers who are revered in Nevarra, but outside it, they are odd at best and evil at worst.” That comment offers character context about how the group is perceived; it is not a complete guide to its beliefs or duties. Emmrich belongs to the Mourn Watch.

Antivan Crows: work as assassins in Antiva
The Antivan Crows are assassins whom EA describes as Antiva’s shadowy protectors. The faction is also caught up in the conflict around occupied Treviso. Choose it for a Rook whose identity is shaped by covert work, deadly skill, and the politics of Antiva. Lucanis is an expert assassin of the Crows.

Which faction should you choose?
Match the faction to the kind of Rook you want to inhabit. The settings and missions point toward distinct roleplaying tones:

Think about three things: the region you want Rook connected to, the work you want them to do, and the dialogue identity you want to bring into the story. If you are torn between two, choose the one whose mission you find more compelling to roleplay; the available official information confirms reactivity but does not support a universal tier list or a definitive mechanical winner.
