The headline’s 88% stress-relief figure is misattributed. In its 2022 report, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) said 66% of Americans played video games regularly; among players, 89% said games provide stress relief, while 88% said games help improve cognitive skills. These are survey responses, not proof that gaming clinically treats stress.
What percentage of Americans play video games?
ESA reported in 2022 that 66% of Americans played video games regularly. Its announcement described that as more than 215.5 million people. The figure is dated: it describes ESA’s 2022 findings, not a current estimate. ESA’s 2022 report and announcement
ESA’s newer 2026 report says 67% of Americans ages 5–90 play video games for at least one hour a week. That is a different measure from playing “regularly,” and it covers a stated age range; the two figures should not be read as a like-for-like trend. ESA’s 2026 report
What did ESA say about gaming and stress relief?
In 2022, 89% of players said video games provide stress relief. The survey asked about respondents’ views; it did not establish that gaming reduces stress for everyone or that it treats a health condition. ESA’s 2022 report

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)

Why does the headline say 88%?
ESA’s 2022 report assigned 88% to players who said video games help improve cognitive skills—not to stress relief. The stress-relief response was 89%. The distinction matters because the two percentages refer to different survey statements. ESA’s 2022 report
How were the 2022 figures collected?
ESA says its online questionnaire was completed in February 2022 by a representative sample of 4,011 U.S. consumers aged 18 and older; the stated margin of error was ±2%. The player findings came from the subset of respondents who played at least one hour a week. ESA used a broad definition of video games, including console, personal computer, mobile, and VR games, as well as social games, mobile augmented reality, virtual reality, and “edutainment.” ESA’s 2022 report

What do the newer stress-relief figures measure?
ESA’s 2025 report page says 81% of U.S. adults believed video games provide stress relief. That differs from the 2022 finding: the year, population wording, and outcome phrasing are not identical. The figures are not a clean time series showing that belief in gaming’s stress-relief value rose or fell. ESA’s 2025 report

No. These results report what respondents said or believed. They do not demonstrate cause and effect, measure a clinical treatment outcome, or show that every kind of game or play session is stress-relieving. ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis said the 2022 report demonstrated games’ impact in areas including wellness and mental health, relationships, community, and skills development; that statement is the association’s characterization of its report, not a clinical finding.
