Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6 crashes on your Steam Deck, start with the situation that has the clearest game-specific report: a crash while changing equipment with a frame-rate cap enabled. A player reported that removing the cap—or trying a particular launch option—stopped the crash in brief tests, but that report dates to July 2024 and does not establish whether the issue affects current builds. The seven checks below separate that anecdotal lead from routine diagnostics and compatibility notes.
What Steam Deck compatibility does—and does not—tell you
SteamDB lists EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6 as Steam Deck Playable and SteamOS-compatible, with Proton stable recommended. The compatibility result, surfaced by SteamDB, says the game “runs successfully on SteamOS”; its recorded test date is 23 August 2024, not a fresh test of every current game, SteamOS, and Proton combination. See the SteamDB compatibility listing.
Valve says Steam Deck compatibility reviews are ongoing, so the label is not a guarantee that every setup is free of crashes. Valve’s compatibility information explains that status can be reviewed over time.
Seven checks to work through
-
Restart and record the crash conditions
Restart the game and Steam Deck, then note exactly when the crash occurs: at startup, during a mission, or while changing equipment. Also note whether it happens every time and whether you had just changed a frame-rate limit, Proton version, or game setting. This is routine diagnosis, not a confirmed EDF6-specific fix.

GuliKit Analog Joystick For Steam Deck LCD (Type A&B), Hall Effect No Drift Electromagnetic Thumbstick Replacement, No Soldering, One-Key Calibration, Right & Left Repair Kit with Caps(Not Fit OLED)- 1. Steam Deck Joystick Upgrade: The repair replacement is designed with the exact same dimensions as the original joystick. Toggle the button on the back to choose the correct type.(Settings →System→Steam Deck Controller ID, MEDA is Type A, MHDA is Type B).Featuring Hall Effect technology, they provide enhanced anti-drift capabilities, smoother operation, touch-sensing functionality, and a significantly extended lifespan.
- 2.No-Soldering Required: Our analog joystick replacement eliminates soldering hassle, because it maintains the same size and interface as the original parts for easy installation, and comes with stick cap to keep the same touch sense functionality. Just align and tighten the screws to fix it—no special tools or soldering skills needed.
- 3.One-Button Calibration: A. Move the joystick to the symmetrical position of the central point. B. Press the tiny calibration button on the board ( as marked on the picture). C. Release the joystick. D. Calibration is successfully completed when you see the joystick return to the center position.
- 4.Reduce the Dead Zone: Minimize controller dead zones for enhanced precision by adjusting settings, potentially reaching a zero dead zone. This customization allows for more responsive input, significantly reducing the factory default's larger dead zones, which can lead to stick drift and imprecise movements.
- 5.Warm Tips: It's needed to recalibrate before securing the back cover. It is normal that the joystick may not return to center each time under no dead zone mode. In case of stuck joystick issue, the stick cap that comes pre-installed becomes loose during shipping, just press the cap vertically down to fix it. If you need help, don't hesitate to contact us and we'll reply within 24 hours.

Install available game and SteamOS updates
Check Steam for a game update and the Deck’s system settings for a SteamOS update, then retry the same action that caused the crash. Compatibility details and community reports can become outdated; the cited listing does not identify a specific update as the fix. SteamDB’s listing records its test date, while Valve notes that compatibility review is ongoing.
-
Test equipment changes without a manual frame cap
If the crash happens when changing equipment and you have set a frame-rate limit, temporarily remove that limit and retry. A Steam Deck player reported an equipment-change crash associated with capped frame rates. This is the most directly relevant reported lead, but one player’s account does not show that a cap causes every crash. Read the July 2024 community report.

Try the reported 30 FPS launch option only if the cap is relevant
The same player suggested
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=30 %command%as a launch option and said it stopped the author from reproducing the equipment-change crash during brief single-player attempts. Treat this as an anecdotal workaround, not an established current fix. If you try it, record your existing launch options first so you can remove the added text and return to your prior setup. The report establishes the string and outcome it described; it does not verify current Steam interface steps or results on today’s builds. See the report and its context. -
Compare Proton stable with Proton Experimental
Proton stable is the runtime SteamDB recommends for this title. The player report also says a Proton Experimental update may have changed the equipment-crash behavior, but it does not prove that Experimental is preferable now. If you compare them, change only the runtime, then repeat the same scenario and check that input still works. Note whether a game or runtime update preceded the problem; do not assume one runtime is universally faster or more stable. Compatibility listing · Community report.

On a PC AMD setup, isolate overlays and external graphics tweaks
This check is for PC troubleshooting, not a Deck-specific fix. An AMD-focused community guide discusses disabling external graphics settings and overlay tools. A Deck commenter in that discussion reported trying Epic overlay removal with Proton-GE 9-11 and Proton Experimental; that is a community account, not proof of a general solution. On a PC, disable one overlay or driver tweak at a time and retest so you can identify whether a change matters. Read the AMD-focused community guide.
-
For setup or controller symptoms, check internet and controller selection
SteamDB’s compatibility notes say first-time setup requires an active internet connection, while single-player does not require internet after setup. The listing also notes that an external Bluetooth or USB controller may need to be selected manually from the Quick Access Menu. These are setup and input checks, not established crash fixes. See the compatibility notes.

Keep online cross-play separate from first-run setup
Steam Support identifies SANDLOT as the developer and D3PUBLISHER as the publisher. It says an Epic account is needed for online cross-play features such as player friend registration and invitations. That account requirement is separate from the Steam Deck listing’s first-time internet requirement; it does not mean an Epic account is required for offline single-player after setup. See the Steam store and support information.
When the crash continues
If none of these checks changes the result, keep a short record of the crash trigger, frame-limit setting, Proton version, and whether it began after an update. The cited equipment-change report is from July 2024 and itself mentions a possible Proton Experimental change, so it cannot establish whether the issue persists on current EDF6, SteamOS, or Proton builds. The evidence here does not support deleting save data, changing system files, or removing game components as a remedy.
