If Helldivers 2 shows “Connection Error: Failed to join game lobby,” first check for game and PS5 system updates, then restart your router. Retry matchmaking after each step. The error can come from a wider matchmaking problem as well as a local connection or software issue, so no one step is a guaranteed fix.
Try these PS5 troubleshooting steps in order
Make one change at a time and try matchmaking again before moving on. That helps distinguish a local improvement from a problem that is still affecting the game’s services.

1. Check for Helldivers 2 and PS5 updates
- On the PS5 home screen, highlight Helldivers 2 and press the Options button.
- Select Check for Update and install an available game update.
- Check the PS5’s system software for an available update and install it.
- Open the game and try matchmaking again.
Arrowhead’s PS5 technical-issues guide, updated August 31, 2026, includes checking for updates among its troubleshooting steps.
2. Restart your router
Turn off your internet router for several minutes, turn it back on, and wait for the connection to return before trying Helldivers 2 again. This checks whether a temporary home-network problem is involved; it cannot correct a game-service matchmaking issue.

3. Clear the PS5 cache
If the error persists, follow the Safe Mode instructions in Arrowhead’s PS5 troubleshooting guide to clear the console cache. Then start the game and retry matchmaking.
4. Rebuild the PS5 database if needed
If clearing the cache does not help, use the same Safe Mode guide to rebuild the database, then try matchmaking again. These are general PS5 troubleshooting measures, not fixes that Arrowhead guarantees for this particular lobby error.
5. Reinstall Helldivers 2 as a last software check
If the less disruptive steps have not helped, reinstall the game using the PS5’s game-management options and test matchmaking afterward. Arrowhead lists reinstallation in its general PS5 technical guidance.

Check whether your own connection is involved
If other online games or services are also having trouble, or you suspect unstable Wi-Fi, try a different network or connect the PS5 to your router with Ethernet. These are diagnostic comparisons, not guaranteed Helldivers 2 fixes: a wired connection cannot resolve a server-side matchmaking failure. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option for testing a wired connection, but the error alone is not evidence that you need new equipment.
Why the error may persist
The message alone cannot identify whether the cause is temporary matchmaking trouble, your router or Wi-Fi, or a game or console software issue. Arrowhead’s current PS5 support guide covers local troubleshooting, while its current known-issues page, updated October 7, 2026, says connectivity problems are being worked on without enumerating every issue.
Recent official patches also acknowledge that matchmaking is not fully reliable for everyone. The August 27, 2026 PATCH 01.000.004 notes describe matchmaking improvements alongside residual instability; the September 24, 2026 PATCH 01.000.400 notes say players may still be unable to join or invite others. If local checks do not help and matchmaking appears broadly affected, retry later and consult Arrowhead’s current known issues or support pages. Those notes do not give a universal fix or restoration timeline for this exact PS5 error.

What the launch-era explanation does—and does not—tell you
During the February 2024 launch period, Arrowhead attributed Quickplay’s failure to join a lobby to difficulty finding valid matches under very high player volume. Deputy Game Director Sagar wrote: “There’s a problem with how we’re finding valid matches for you, when you attempt to matchmake, and it gets worse with a very large player base.” That explanation describes the launch-era problem; it does not establish the cause of a current PS5 player’s error.
Arrowhead’s launch-era post suggested joining friends directly, enabling cross-play on PS5, entering a solo game and deploying an SOS beacon, or choosing a planet with fewer players. Treat those as historical workarounds, not verified current fixes. The post also reported that a launch-era PC patch raised Quickplay success from about 5–10% to about 75–80%; those figures were for PC in that period, varied by region, and are not current PS5 success rates. Current official material cited here does not establish a PS5-specific success percentage.
