Dragon Age: The Veilguard feels like a return to BioWare’s strengths when it puts a memorable team, personal quests and a sprawling fantasy threat at the center. Its faster, real-time combat gives the series a sharper action focus, though GameSpot’s review argues that the story is less complex and nuanced than earlier entries. “Return to form” is a persuasive verdict—not a claim that every part of BioWare’s past has returned.
What makes The Veilguard feel like BioWare again?
At its heart, The Veilguard is a party adventure. Rook leads seven companions against two ancient elven gods, and the campaign builds around recruiting that group, taking on missions and developing relationships. That familiar structure gives the game its strongest connection to BioWare’s role-playing tradition: the world-ending stakes matter, but so do the people facing them together. EA’s product description establishes the premise, while Jordan Ramée’s GameSpot review praises the companion-centered adventure as a comforting return to form.
The companions are not just members of the combat party. Their personal stories and relationships are woven into the campaign, and EA says companion quests and side content can directly affect later stages of the story. That connection gives optional play a narrative purpose: spending time with the group can shape what comes later, rather than simply adding a detour before the main plot. EA’s launch-day guide outlines that relationship between side content and the main story.
The result is recognizable without being a replica of an older Dragon Age. Ramée’s review sees the companion-driven framework as a strength, but also judges the writing less complex and nuanced than the series’ earlier work. The game brings back a familiar kind of adventure; it does not, in this reviewer’s view, fully recover the same narrative depth.

How does combat differ from earlier Dragon Age games?
The Veilguard leans further into real-time action. Rather than making tactical planning the defining rhythm, combat asks players to combine weapon attacks, magical abilities and companion actions in a more direct, active fight. GameSpot describes a system built around setting up and detonating combos, with skill trees and three specializations for each class. Ramée reports that learning how those pieces fit together made combat satisfying.
This direction follows a long-running shift in the series. GameSpot characterizes Origins as rooted in tactical play, Dragon Age II as more action-oriented and Inquisition as having an MMO-like feel. The Veilguard pushes further toward immediate action. That may suit players who want a brisker, more hands-on battle loop; it is a meaningful change for anyone who valued pausing to plan and position a party.

The positive combat verdict has a qualification: GameSpot flags issues with the mage class. Its praise is for the overall rhythm of setups, abilities and attacks, not an assertion that every class plays equally well. The review’s assessment therefore supports a return to form in the feel of an engaging adventure, not an unqualified claim that every system is equally successful.
Is the story as nuanced as previous Dragon Age games?
Not according to GameSpot’s review. Ramée appreciates the familiar combination of companions, relationships and missions, but says The Veilguard is not as complex or nuanced as past Dragon Age games. That distinction matters: the game can feel recognizably BioWare in how it organizes a long fantasy journey while still offering less of the narrative texture some fans expect from the series.

That is why “return to form” works best as a qualified critical judgment. It describes the pleasures of the team-based adventure and the momentum of its combat, rather than proving that BioWare has recreated every strength of its earlier games. The review is one critic’s view, not evidence of universal agreement among players or fans.

EA recommends checking customization and accessibility settings. On PC, the publisher says the game supports keyboard and mouse as well as controllers, offers a range of graphics settings, and is Steam Deck Verified. Those are EA’s feature statements, not independent findings about performance on particular hardware.
EA also reported that PC accounted for 40% of its platform-testing effort and that development included more than 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing. The publisher said close to 10,000 hours of user-research testing informed controls and the user interface for keyboard-and-mouse and controller play. These figures describe EA’s reported work; they do not guarantee identical performance on every PC. The details appear in EA’s PC features article.

In its August 2024 release announcement, creative director John Epler described the design goal this way: “We wanted you to have the choice to really express yourself, and do that in a world full of adventure and danger.” That statement explains the team’s intent, rather than establishing how every player will experience the game. EA’s announcement also confirms the release date and platforms.
Does the review score settle the debate?
No single score can settle a question of taste, and the available Metacritic figure is a dated PS5 snapshot. The snapshot showed an 82 Metascore from 77 critic reviews, with 55 positive, 18 mixed and zero negative classifications. Those totals can change as the page updates, and they represent PS5 critic reviews—not a score across every platform or a measure of all players’ opinions. Metacritic’s PS5 critic-review page is the source for that platform-specific aggregate.
