DraftKings announced on May 6, 2013, that it had closed a $7 million Series A round led by Atlas Venture. The company said it would use the funding to develop its product and customer experience and to expand marketing and distribution across its web and mobile offerings.

Who led DraftKings’ 2013 Series A?

Atlas Venture led the $7 million round, announced about a year after DraftKings launched. VC News Daily’s archived announcement dates the launch to April 28, 2012. The Next Web, GamesBeat and VC News Daily all reported the financing on May 6, 2013. The reports do not state a company valuation.

Why did DraftKings raise the money?

DraftKings said the proceeds would help build out its service and improve the user experience, while expanding marketing and distribution. CEO Jason Robins described the goal as becoming “top of the heap” and said the company would “build out our user experience and expand our marketing and distribution,” according to GamesBeat.

The planned expansion focused on web and mobile daily fantasy sports. Robins also framed the product as a companion to watching live sports: “Our products provide a true second screen complement to the sports viewing experience,” he said in the funding announcement archived by VC News Daily.

What did DraftKings offer at the time?

Contemporary accounts described short-duration fantasy contests built around professional sports. The period-specific reports list baseball, football, basketball and hockey; The Next Web also included college basketball and college football. VC News Daily described free and paid contests, salary-cap formats, cash prizes and quick payouts. GamesBeat reported that the service had real-money contests on the web and social or mobile app versions using virtual currency. These are descriptions of the 2013 service, not evidence of current features, availability or legal status.

What traction did reports cite?

Contemporary coverage offered conflicting user counts. The Next Web reported more than 1 million users across web and mobile, while GamesBeat reported more than 100,000 registered players. The articles do not explain whether the figures refer to different populations or dates, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or as a settled count.

GamesBeat separately reported 18 employees and more than 500,000 matches in the preceding year; those figures were reported by that outlet at the time.

What the funding announcement establishes

The announcement documents a $7 million Series A led by Atlas Venture and identifies product development, customer experience, marketing and distribution as the intended uses. Ryan Moore, an Atlas Venture partner, said the firm remained bullish on daily fantasy sports and believed DraftKings was positioned to become a leader in the segment, as quoted by GamesBeat and the archived VC News Daily announcement. The announcement and contemporary reports do not establish a valuation or independently audited performance figures.
