Short answer: Bethesda executive Peter Hines described the original Oblivion and Skyrim as roughly the same size in square miles, but said Skyrim was denser with content. Bethesda has not published a separate map-area measurement for Oblivion Remastered, so the original-game comparison is the best available guide—not a verified measurement of the remaster.
How big is Oblivion Remastered’s map compared with Skyrim’s?
In a GamesRadar+ interview about Skyrim, then-Bethesda vice president of public relations and marketing Peter Hines said the game was “roughly the same size as Oblivion in terms of square miles,” while describing Skyrim as “much denser” in content. He was comparing Skyrim with the original Oblivion, not reporting a measurement of Oblivion Remastered. GamesRadar+’s Skyrim interview
That makes “roughly the same landmass, with Skyrim denser” the most defensible comparison. It does not establish identical boundaries, an exact area for either map, or how long either world takes to cross.
Is there an official square-mile figure for Oblivion Remastered?
Bethesda’s launch announcement describes the project as a remaster rather than a remake: the original game remains “as you remember playing it,” presented with current technology. The announcement does not give a new map footprint or square-mile figure. Bethesda’s launch announcement

A 2005 GameSpot interview gave an approximate figure of 16 square miles for Oblivion’s world. Treat that as a historical, approximate figure for the original game—not a current, independently measured area for Oblivion Remastered. GameSpot’s 2005 Oblivion Q&A
Why might Skyrim feel larger?
Square-mile area and the amount of activity within that area are different measures. Hines’s comparison specifically distinguished them: he characterized the original worlds as roughly equal in square miles, but Skyrim as having more content packed into its space. More locations and activities can make a map feel busier or more substantial without making its landmass larger.

- EXPANSION ONLY: Requires The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – Adventure Board Game base game to play; enhances existing campaigns without replacing core systems.
- Landmass: Hines’s approximate comparison concerns square miles.
- Content density: His description says Skyrim has more content in that space.
- Traversal and boundaries: The cited sources do not provide a measured playable-area comparison or equivalent travel-time test.
What the comparison does—and does not—tell you
The available evidence supports a broad comparison between the original Oblivion and Skyrim, plus Bethesda’s framing of the remaster as preserving the original game through updated technology. It does not establish a remaster-specific area, an exact percentage difference, or a precise ratio between the playable maps. So if you are asking whether Oblivion Remastered has a demonstrably bigger map than Skyrim, the sources do not support that claim; the cautious answer is that the original games were described as roughly equal in landmass, with Skyrim denser in content.
