Fallout: Why Did the Bombs Drop to Start the Great War?

Fallout’s Great War grew out of resource conflicts and the Sino-American War, but official sources do not confirm who launched first. Tim Cain’s account is explicitly non-canon.

The bombs fell because Fallout’s world had been pushed toward nuclear war by escalating resource conflicts and the Sino-American War. The exact first strike, however, is not established as canon by the official sources cited here. Original Fallout lead developer Tim Cain later said China fired first in the original team’s assumptions, while stressing that this was never stated in the game and is not canon.

What led to the Great War?

Fallout places the Great War in a world strained by resource conflicts and the war between the United States and China. Bethesda’s official franchise timeline identifies the Great War as the 2077 event that scorched the Earth in nuclear flame. That context supports a broad explanation—mounting geopolitical and resource pressures—not one definitive, officially confirmed trigger.

Bethesda dates the exchange to October 23, 2077, in its Fallout Day 2025 article. The bombs brought the conflict to a catastrophic nuclear conclusion, but the official material cited here does not identify who launched first.

Who dropped the first bomb?

Fallout canon, as established by the official sources cited here, does not confirm a first launcher. Tim Cain, the original Fallout lead developer, later said that China fired first according to assumptions held by the original team. He also explicitly said the idea was not canon and was never directly stated in the game.

In a PC Gamer report published October 13, 2025, Cain described a chain of events involving U.S. biological-weapons research that violated a treaty, China discovering the research, and the United States continuing the work after it was supposedly stopped. He characterized China as technically firing the first nuclear weapon in that conception, while arguing the United States could be seen as starting the crisis through illegal research and repeated deception.

That distinction matters: Cain’s recollection offers a possible explanation of how the original team understood the escalation, not an authoritative answer for the franchise. It is therefore accurate to say that Cain recalled China firing first, but not that Fallout canon definitively identifies China, the United States, Vault-Tec, or another actor as the first to launch.

How Fallout 4 depicts the bombs falling

For a direct in-game view of the moment, Fallout 4 opens with a pre-war character entering cryogenic stasis as the bombs fall. Bethesda’s timeline connects the game’s opening to the Great War; it depicts the event rather than resolving who initiated it.
