Project Borealis: Prologue is already available on Steam: it was released on November 11, 2024. The full fan-made Project Borealis game is a separate release, and its official FAQ says no release date has been announced.
When did Project Borealis: Prologue release?
Steam lists Project Borealis: Prologue as released on November 11, 2024. The project’s official site also dates its prologue announcement to November 11, 2024 and directs players to Steam to download it.
The prologue is free, but Steam identifies it as a community-made mod that requires ownership of Half-Life 2. It is not a paid standalone game.
Does the full Project Borealis game have a release date?
No. The team’s official FAQ says, “We have not announced a release date for the game yet.” That answer concerns the full Project Borealis game, not the prologue that is already playable.

The FAQ describes the Ravenholm demo as a small taste of gameplay and a progress marker used to gather feedback while the team works toward the full game. That demo context should not be mistaken for a release announcement for the complete project.
What is Project Borealis?
Project Borealis is a fan-made attempt at a Half-Life 2: Episode 3, based on Marc Laidlaw’s Epistle 3 outline. The team’s official press kit says the project formed in August 2017 and is being made with Unreal Engine, adapted to feel close to Half-Life 2’s Source engine.

It is not an official Valve game or a confirmed continuation of the series’ canon. The Steam listing explicitly identifies Project Borealis and its prologue as fan creations unaffiliated with Valve.

- Open the Project Borealis: Prologue Steam page.
- Make sure you own Half-Life 2, which Steam lists as a requirement for the community-made mod.
- Use the Steam page’s download or install option to access the free prologue.
