If Firewatch crashes on a Windows PC, start with the reversible checks: compare your hardware with the game’s published minimums, confirm the game is using the right graphics processor, update its driver, and check memory and free disk space. Then check security-software access and verify the Steam installation. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes: Panic’s support guide lists possible causes and recommendations, not success rates.
1. Check that your PC meets Firewatch’s requirements
Campo Santo/Panic’s published Windows minimums are a baseline, not a guarantee that every system meeting them will run without crashes. The requirements page was last updated December 5, 2018, so it should also be read as the game’s stated requirements rather than a recently revised compatibility assessment.
| Component | Published minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 7 or higher, 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 at 2.00 GHz or AMD equivalent |
| Memory | 6 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce 450 or better, with 1 GB memory; DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 4 GB available space, according to Steam’s listing |
Check your PC’s processor, installed memory, and graphics hardware in Windows’ system information and display settings. Steam’s listing gives the 4 GB storage figure; Panic separately identifies low free space on the Windows system drive as a possible crash cause, covered below. Read Panic’s PC requirements and Steam’s Firewatch technical-support listing.
2. Make sure a laptop uses its dedicated graphics card
On a laptop with both integrated and dedicated graphics, Firewatch may launch on the lower-powered GPU. Panic’s 2018 performance guidance points players to the graphics control panel to select the dedicated GPU: NVIDIA users were directed to NVIDIA Control Panel and AMD users to Catalyst Control Center. The names and available controls can differ with current driver software, so look for the application-specific graphics preference in the control panel supplied for your GPU.

- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.

- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Panic says integrated graphics are not officially supported. Some integrated GPUs may still run the game, but the support page warns of hitching or performance below 30 FPS; it suggests low settings and resolution, avoiding battery power, and choosing a maximum-performance power setting. See Panic’s performance guidance.
3. Update the graphics driver
Panic lists outdated graphics drivers among possible crash causes and recommends using current drivers. Check for updates through the official driver channel for your graphics hardware—Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD as applicable—and restart Windows after installing. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.

Drivers can help when the game crashes or fails to display correctly, but an update is a diagnostic step rather than proof that the driver caused the problem. Panic’s crash guide and its black-screen guidance both recommend graphics-driver updates.
4. Check how much RAM is installed
Panic names less than 6 GB of RAM as a possible cause of crashes. Its requirements page says 4 GB may work much of the time, but can also lead to crashes, frame-rate hitches, or stability issues in some cases. Check installed memory before considering any upgrade; these support notes do not establish that adding RAM will resolve a particular crash.

5. Free space on the Windows system drive
Panic lists less than 2 GB free on the operating-system drive—typically C:—as a potential cause. This is different from Steam’s 4 GB available-storage requirement for installing the game: Firewatch can have enough room for its files while Windows’ system drive is still nearly full. Check free space on the drive where Windows is installed and make room using files you can safely remove or move.
6. Check whether security software blocks the save folder
Panic says antivirus or similar security software may block access to Firewatch’s Windows save folder under %APP_DATA%. If the game crashes around saving or loading, check your security software’s blocked items or access notifications and whether Firewatch can read and write its save location. Do not leave protection disabled as a routine fix.

For a black screen, Panic’s December 2018 guidance also suggested reinstalling with antivirus turned off. That advice was published in connection with reports associated with a late-December Windows 10 update; it is historical guidance, not evidence of a current Windows-wide issue. If you consider a reinstall, use caution with any temporary security change and restore protection afterward. Read the dated black-screen guidance.

If you play through Steam, use the game’s installed-files verification option in its library settings. Panic’s crash guide gives the instruction: “If playing on Steam, run Verify Integrity of Game Cache on Firewatch.” Current Steam interface labels may differ from that 2018 wording. Verification checks the local installation and can replace files Steam finds damaged or missing; it does not address hardware or driver problems. See Panic’s crash guide.

8. Send the crash log and system specifications to support
If the crash continues, collect your PC’s system specifications and Firewatch’s Windows log so support can categorize the problem. Panic identifies the log as FirewatchFirewatch_Dataoutput_log.txt. From Steam, browse to the game’s local files and open the indicated folder path; attach the log and your specifications when contacting Panic support. This is an escalation step, not a repair.
If you hear sound but see a black screen
Panic’s black-screen article describes reports of sound without a visible image and connects them to a late-December Windows 10 update affecting graphics drivers. The page, last updated December 5, 2018, says the issue was under investigation and recommends updating graphics drivers; it also suggests reinstalling with antivirus turned off. This is a historical report, not confirmation that a current Windows update causes the symptom. Start with the driver check above; do not treat the old registry-file download mentioned in that article as a routine fix.
