A fan team led by developer skmp adapted the reverse-engineered PC version of Grand Theft Auto III to Sega Dreamcast hardware. The December 2024 release was an alpha that players had to compile themselves using their own PC game data—not an official Rockstar release or a ready-to-run game image.
What is DCA3?
DCA3 is a homebrew port of the PC version of Grand Theft Auto III to Dreamcast. It builds on re3, a reverse-engineered version of the PC game code, and KallistiOS, a software development kit used for Dreamcast homebrew projects. Hackaday’s December 30, 2024 report describes the team adapting the code and drawing the game’s graphics and audio assets from a PC copy supplied by the player: Hackaday’s report on the port.

The project’s GitLab landing page describes it as “A port of librw and re3 to the Dreamcast.” That establishes the project’s technical basis, but the accessible page does not state a current release number: DCA3 project page.
How did the Dreamcast port begin?
In a December 2024 interview with The Dreamcast Junkyard, project lead skmp said he first considered the idea after encountering re3: “One day, I accidently came across the re3 source code (i.e. the reverse engineered code for the PC version of GTA3) and I immediately thought, ‘why couldn’t this work on the Dreamcast?’” He dated the start of work to July 2024 and described his own role as spanning video, audio, performance, initial testing, and coordination, alongside wider contributions to re3 and librw. The project also connects to the game’s history: The Dreamcast Junkyard reported that development of GTA III began on Dreamcast before moving to PlayStation 2. The publication reported 11 million copies sold on PS2; that figure is its reported number, not an independently verified primary sales record. This history makes DCA3 an appealing “what if,” but it does not establish why the commercial platform changed or predict how a professionally developed Dreamcast edition would have performed.
What did the December 2024 alpha require?
The Dreamcast Junkyard described the available version as an alpha, not a finished retail game. Its setup account said players needed their own legitimate PC copy of GTA III and had to compile the image themselves. For hardware, it described using a Dreamcast setup that can run burned discs or an optical drive emulator. The port does not bundle licensed game assets or turn the project into a plug-and-play commercial release. The December 2024 coverage and interview.
What you need to try it
- A Dreamcast, or another compatible route to running Dreamcast software. The coverage supports play on original hardware; it does not establish a current emulator compatibility list.
- A Dreamcast setup capable of running the compiled image, such as a burned-disc-capable configuration or a compatible optical drive emulator. Verify compatibility with your console and device before buying or installing hardware.
- Your own legitimate PC copy of GTA III and the ability to compile the image, as described for the December 2024 alpha.
A console or optical drive emulator supplies neither the DCA3 build nor the game data. Do not assume an online download of a prebuilt image is authorized or compatible.
What did the later performance work change?
On March 13, 2025, Time Extension reported a substantial set of optimizations by contributor Falco Girgis. The work covered low-level math routines, the RenderWare driver layer, lighting calculations, collision intersection and contact resolution, and application-level algorithms. Girgis described the approach this way: “I went through all of the low-level common math infrastructure in both the engine and at the RenderWare driver layer and made numerous optimizations,” Time Extension’s March 2025 report.

That report showed footage captured on real Dreamcast hardware under heavy load, but said the optimization update was still a draft awaiting further review and testing—not a publicly available release at that time. GamesRadar+ also described smoother-looking footage and less texture pop-in, while discussing the developer’s work across the engine and application layers: GamesRadar+ coverage of the demonstrated version. Neither report supplies a controlled benchmark or independently verified frame-rate figure, so the footage should not be treated as a performance measurement for a current public build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is DCA3 available now, and what is its current status?
The reporting establishes a December 2024 alpha and a March 2025 draft optimization effort, but it does not verify the project’s current 2026 release status. The accessible GitLab landing page has no current release details, and the project’s linked setup page was inaccessible when checked. The current build number, whether the optimization work was merged, exact PC game-version compatibility, and up-to-date installation steps therefore remain unconfirmed.
For anyone choosing a route to try the project, keep the known milestones separate: the December 2024 alpha had a self-compile and user-supplied game-data requirement; the March 2025 performance improvements were reported as draft work. Do not assume those improvements are in the alpha or in a later publicly available build without current release documentation.
Why the port matters to Dreamcast fans
DCA3 is notable because it demonstrates a community team bringing the reverse-engineered PC code for a major open-world game to Dreamcast hardware. Its appeal is both technical and historical: it answers “could this work on the Dreamcast?” with a playable fan project, while echoing the reported early Dreamcast development history of the original game. It is not evidence of what a complete, commercially produced, professionally optimized Dreamcast version would have looked or run like.
