Fate of the Vaal was a temporary Path of Exile 2 league launched with version 0.4.0, The Last of the Druids. Its central activity was powering and arranging Atziri’s Temple; the league ended on May 25, 2026, while Grinding Gear Games said the temple mechanic would remain in the game.
How Fate of the Vaal worked
Vaal structures scattered across Wraeclast could be activated to affect nearby creatures. Players sacrificed the afflicted monsters to power devices, then used the resulting energy to travel to Lira Vaal, Atziri’s temple. Completing more beacon encounters supplied energy for further changes to the temple.
Inside the temple, players chose rooms that presented different challenges and rewards. Their placement mattered: rooms next to ones that benefited them could level up, increasing both the challenge and the rewards. The loop combined encounters in Wraeclast with resource gathering and decisions about how to build the temple.
The official version 0.4.0 patch notes describe the league’s mechanics and story. GGG’s November 27, 2025 teaser announced a December 4 reveal and December 12 launch.

What the story was about
The setting is Lira Vaal, the ancient temple of Atziri, Queen of the Vaal, during the height of her power. Atziri seeks eternal youth through the Beast’s power, putting her civilization at risk. The player faces her Royal Architect and devoted followers, and the official description hints that events in the past may not be fixed.
“With the power of the Beast, Atziri plans to risk her entire civilization in pursuit of eternal youth.”

League variants
Fate of the Vaal had Standard, Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found variants. The official patch notes say they shared the league’s core mechanics and items; the variants differed in their usual play constraints rather than offering separate temple systems.

GGG announced the transition on May 15, 2026. The temporary Fate of the Vaal leagues ended May 25, 2026 (PDT), and characters and items migrated to the corresponding Standard or Hardcore Early Access leagues; the announcement said there would be no wipe. This ended the temporary league, not the temple feature.

In that May 15 announcement, GGG said Atziri’s Temple would continue as a core mechanic. The announced access path began with Vaal beacons in Act Three: completing six beacon encounters unlocked the temple in the present, while additional encounters in the Doryani’s Contingency interlude allowed visits to the past. At endgame, beacons could also appear in maps, with temple level based on the area level where crystals were collected. That describes the announced core implementation; later changes may affect how it currently works.
