What did critics like about Far Cry 4?
Freedom of approach and the pleasure of exploring Kyrat were recurring strengths. Nick Cowen of The Guardian, in an excerpt reproduced by Metacritic and GameSpot, wrote: “Far Cry 4 truly shines in the almost bacchanalian sense of freedom it bestows on the player as they traverse through its environment.” Metacritic’s selected excerpts also point to co-op as a strength.

GameSpot’s contemporary roundup captured the appeal of a world packed with things to discover. It reproduced The Guardian’s praise for traversing the environment and Joystiq’s description of an absorbing world full of adventures. The combination of exploration, activities and options for how to tackle situations helped make the open world a central part of the game’s positive reception.
What were the main criticisms?
Reservations tended to focus on familiarity and execution, rather than a broad rejection of the game. In GameSpot’s November 14, 2014 roundup, Eurogamer’s Aoife Wilson observed that the sequel added weapons, vehicles, modes and territory, but cautioned that “more does not necessarily mean better.” Metro’s David Jenkins said, “Far Cry 4 might not be doing anything terribly new, but it does do almost everything it sets out to extremely well.” GamesRadar’s excerpt criticized the writing and sense of purpose.

TIME reviewer Matt Peckham gave the PS4 version 5/5. He praised freeform exploration and emergent situations, while also discussing repetitive structures, limited rewards for quiet exploration and the lack of co-op play in story missions. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal consensus.
