If Valheim crashes at startup or will not launch, work through Steam’s basic checks in order: restart your computer and Steam, update your operating system and drivers, verify the game files, and temporarily close non-essential software. Then compare your system with the requirements for your platform. No single fix is guaranteed; the cause can vary with your hardware, software, game build, and operating system.
Try these checks in order
Steam says launch failures can have many causes that are difficult to diagnose across different hardware and software configurations. These steps are general Steam troubleshooting guidance, not a confirmed Valheim-specific fix for every crash.
- Restart your computer, then reopen Steam. Start with a fresh restart before testing the game again.
- Install operating-system updates. Check Windows Update, your Linux system’s update tools, or the update settings for your platform.
- Update your device drivers. On Windows, check for current drivers for your computer components, especially the graphics hardware. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that an outdated driver is the cause.
- Verify Valheim’s installed files in Steam. Restart Steam, open Library, right-click Valheim and choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. The check can take several minutes. Steam notes that a file may fail verification because it is a local configuration file that should not be replaced.
- Temporarily close non-essential software. Close one potentially interfering overlay or background program at a time, then try launching Valheim again. Steam recommends this general check but does not identify a particular Valheim conflict here.
- Compare your system with the requirements for your operating system. Use Valheim’s current Steam listing for Windows, macOS, or SteamOS/Linux rather than assuming the requirements are interchangeable.
- Contact the developer if the crash continues. Steam recommends contacting the game developer for in-depth support; the Valheim technical-support listing names Iron Gate AB and provides a support page.
Check the requirements for your platform
Steam cautions that a computer at or below a game’s requirements may have trouble launching or may perform poorly. The figures below are the Windows specifications on Valheim’s Steam store listing; they are not crash statistics or evidence that a particular component is faulty.

For macOS or SteamOS/Linux, consult the corresponding platform section of the current store listing. Do not use the Windows figures as a substitute for those separate requirements.
Why a 2024 fix may not apply now
The title’s 2024 wording points to an earlier point in Valheim’s development. The official Steam announcement archive includes a July 1, 2024 hotfix reference, including a macOS quality-settings change; that historical note does not establish a universal startup-crash fix. Valheim’s official support index also lists a 1.0 FAQ dated July 1, 2026, so advice tied to an older build may not fit the current game or every platform. Check the game version and operating system when assessing a version-specific suggestion.
