In the original Football Manager 2016, a narrow 4-3-2-1 and a 4-2-3-1 are both plausible starting shapes for Liverpool. The first leans on central midfielders and attacking midfielders; the second gives you more natural width, if your save has enough suitable wide players. Neither is a guaranteed winning tactic: choose roles and duties around the squad in your database, then adjust to the opponent and match.
Which Football Manager is this Liverpool guide for?
This is a historical guide to Sports Interactive and SEGA’s Football Manager 2016, the 2015 edition—not a guide to a later Football Manager or Liverpool’s current squad. SEGA announced a PC/Mac release date of November 13, 2015. Steam’s release announcement describes the game’s player selection, tactics, team talks, substitutions, touchline instructions and live 3D match engine (SEGA Europe’s FM16 announcement; Steam’s launch announcement).

FM Scout’s Liverpool guide was published on December 1, 2015, and discusses the roster in its original database context. Later database updates can change the squad, while the guide itself says finances vary by start date. Treat its player assessments and suggested lineups as period advice, not universal instructions for every FM16 save.
FM16 also received an update identified on Steam as version 16.2.0 on December 16, 2015. If you are following squad-specific advice, identify the database or update used by your save; a formation suggestion may travel between versions more readily than a player list (Steam’s FM16 news and updates).
#1 Best Overall
4-3-2-1: prioritize the middle of the pitch
FM Scout’s period guide presents a 4-3-2-1 as a way to use Liverpool’s central-midfield choices and Brazilian attacking midfielders. It has a goalkeeper, back four, three central midfielders, two attacking midfielders and one striker. In that setup, the forward could be Benteke or Sturridge, depending on the role you want the striker to perform and the players available in your database (FM Scout’s Liverpool FC Guide for FM16).
The trade-off is width. The guide notes that young wide players may need retraining to play as attacking midfielders and could remain backups. Before choosing the shape, decide whether you are comfortable building attacks through the centre rather than relying on natural wide players.

4-2-3-1: add width, if the squad can supply it
The alternative in the period guide is a 4-2-3-1: two central midfielders behind a line of three attacking midfielders, with one striker ahead. The wide players can cross toward a target forward or cut inside, giving you more ways to attack than the narrower shape. The guide’s caution is that it considered Liverpool short of depth in natural wide options at the time.
Use that assessment as a prompt to inspect your own squad, not as a fixed verdict. Check who can play wide in your save, how well they perform there, and whether the striker suits the service you intend to provide. The starting database and any later update matter.

Choose roles and duties before copying a formation
A formation sets players’ starting positions; it does not by itself define how the team will play. Archived Steam Community guidance recommends matching roles and duties to player strengths, comparing your squad with opponents, and considering the opposition’s shape and your players’ condition. It also advises building a preferred style with team instructions and changing the approach during matches. Steam currently marks that community guide as removed, so treat this as archived user advice, not official documentation (“How to Play FM16: A Legendary wwfan’s Guide”).
- Check your personnel: Ask whether the players you intend to use can perform their assigned roles, especially in wide and attacking-midfield positions.
- Set a clear attacking plan: Decide whether your shape should use the middle, stretch play through wide players, or create service for a particular kind of striker. Use team instructions to support that plan rather than adding instructions without a purpose.
- Account for the opponent and conditions: Consider the opposition’s formation and player qualities alongside your own players’ condition. A setup that suits one match may expose a weakness in another.
- Reassess during the match: Change roles, duties, instructions or overall approach when the game shows that your original plan is not working.
A Sports Interactive community discussion from June 2016 includes a participant’s view that counterattacks could happen more often in FM16 than in FM15, while emphasizing that a team still needs a setup able to exploit them. The discussion is explicitly subjective, so take it as a community observation about the version rather than a definitive mechanic specification (Sports Interactive Community discussion: FM16 vs. FM15 tactics).

Finances and start-date differences
FM Scout reports approximately £57.91 million for a July 6, 2015 start in its guide, but says a later start can produce a different value. That is the guide author’s estimate for a particular start context—not an official SEGA figure or a budget to assume in every save. Check the finances shown in your own game before planning transfers.

SEGA’s 2015 announcement listed Fantasy Draft and Create-A-Club modes, a customizable touchline manager, expanded set-piece control, enhanced match analysis, improved statistics and screens, and “more than 2,000 new match animations.” The publisher also said that boxed copies from participating retailers received a limited-edition package with the Football Manager documentary. These are launch-era product details, not confirmation of present-day stock, activation, regional availability or operating-system compatibility (SEGA Europe’s FM16 announcement).

Do not confuse Football Manager 2016 with Liverpool FC Fantasy Manager 2016. Liverpool FC announced that mobile fantasy game separately in October 2015; it is not the Sports Interactive management game described here (Liverpool FC’s Fantasy Manager announcement).
Can you still buy and play the original FM16?
An original boxed PC/Mac edition existed at launch, but the launch announcement does not establish whether copies are available now, whether a copy can still be activated, or whether it will work on a particular current system. Verify those details with the seller and the relevant platform before buying. No present-day retail listing or compatibility status is established here.
