Critics broadly welcomed Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker as the emotional payoff to the long-running Hydaelyn and Zodiark saga and a foundation for the MMO’s next chapter. Metacritic lists 28 critic reviews, but that count is not a score or proof of universal agreement. Most importantly for new players, Endwalker is an expansion for existing owners of the full game, not a standalone release.
What critics said about Endwalker
Metacritic’s current page lists 28 critic reviews and excerpts that repeatedly highlight the story’s resolution and the expansion’s role in setting up the future of Final Fantasy XIV. That supports a broad picture of critical enthusiasm, particularly around the narrative payoff; it does not establish that every critic agreed or that reviews reached the same conclusions about every part of the game. Metacritic’s Endwalker critic-review listing is a changing aggregator page, so a score should be quoted only with a fresh, dated snapshot and its platform context.
Why the story payoff depends on what you have played
Endwalker is the fourth expansion, and its central appeal as a saga-ending chapter is strongest for players who have followed the story leading into it. The available review excerpts emphasize emotional impact and resolution, but they do not provide enough detail to make a reliable review-by-review comparison of pacing, combat, encounter difficulty, or post-launch content. Newcomers should therefore distinguish the critics’ praise for the culmination from a claim that the expansion works as an entry point.
Can you play Endwalker on its own?
No. Square Enix says Endwalker is intended for players who own the full version of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, and that the expansion cannot be played on its own. It is not a standalone boxed game. Square Enix also distinguishes the physical Collector’s Box from digital Collector’s Editions; PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam customers should use their respective platforms for digital editions. Check the official product information for the edition and platform details: Square Enix’s Endwalker product page.

Launch access and platform context
A PlayStation 5 review excerpt noted extremely long queues, but that is a launch-period access issue, not evidence of current service conditions. Metacritic offers platform-filtered review listings, including a PlayStation 5 page, so platform-specific review context should be kept separate when comparing scores or technical impressions. The review excerpts available here do not substantiate a broader comparison of platform performance.

How to read the review evidence
- Review count: Metacritic displays 28 critic reviews on its current Endwalker page; the number may change.
- Best-supported strength: Critics’ excerpts emphasize the saga’s conclusion, emotional resolution, and the groundwork laid for the MMO’s future.
- What remains unestablished: The excerpts alone do not support detailed claims about combat, pacing, difficulty, or post-launch content across the full review set.
- Score comparisons: Use a dated snapshot and identify the platform filter, rather than treating an undated aggregator score as fixed.
