Then try Windows’ app repair and Minecraft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool before reinstalling. Back up your worlds before uninstalling anything.
1. Check the Microsoft account in all three apps
Minecraft recommends using the same Microsoft account with a Minecraft license in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. The Launcher relies on Microsoft and Xbox services for license validation and related features, so an account mismatch can interfere with installation or updates. - Open the Minecraft Launcher and check which Microsoft account is signed in.
- Open the Microsoft Store and check the account shown in its profile menu. If it is the wrong account, sign out and sign in with the account that owns Minecraft.
- Open the Xbox app and check that it is signed into that same account.
- Close and reopen the Launcher, then see whether the update continues.
This account check also matters if you downloaded the installer from Minecraft.net: Minecraft says that installation still requires a Microsoft Store login. See Minecraft’s installation guidance.
2. Repair the Launcher and Gaming Services
If the accounts match, use Windows’ built-in app repair option for Minecraft Launcher and run Minecraft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool. Minecraft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance recommends these options for Launcher freezes and update problems; they are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes. The guidance is available in a Portuguese-localized Help article, which notes that its translation may contain errors: Minecraft Launcher freezing, crashing, or not updating.

To find the app repair control, open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Minecraft Launcher, open its additional options, and choose Repair if that option is available. Windows labels can vary by version. Repair is intended to address the app without using the uninstall-and-reinstall path.
Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool using the instructions linked from Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance. Xbox services deliver Minecraft updates, and Minecraft says the tool can help with game-update problems as well as Launcher freezes. If Store installation or update behavior is also affected, continue with the Store cache step below.

3. Reset the Microsoft Store cache if Store behavior is involved
If Microsoft Store is also failing to install or update apps, Minecraft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance recommends resetting the Store cache. Use the Windows-supported Store reset procedure rather than deleting Launcher folders or game data. A Store cache reset is specifically relevant when Store behavior appears involved; it is not a diagnosis for every stalled Launcher download.
4. Reinstall only after backing up worlds
If repair does not resolve the issue, Minecraft lists uninstalling and reinstalling the Launcher as a general troubleshooting step. Back up your worlds before uninstalling. Do not treat deleting the .minecraft folder or game data as a routine first fix; Minecraft’s guidance specifically calls for protecting worlds before reinstalling. For a fresh installation, Minecraft lists the Xbox app and Minecraft.net as download routes. Sign into the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft. If you use the Minecraft.net installer, you still need to sign in to the Microsoft Store for installation.

Minecraft’s support index lists a dedicated article titled “Troubleshoot Minecraft Launcher Not Updating on Windows.” Its exact steps are not available in the linked support index, so do not rely on guessed cache-folder deletions, commands, or other undocumented fixes. Open the Minecraft Help Center and search for that title to check the current instructions.
