Netflix’s confirmation of his departure came after he moved from leading the games division to a generative-AI-focused role in 2024, as the company continued to refine its games strategy. The reporting confirms the departure but does not establish why he left or link it to Netflix’s strategy changes.
What happened to Mike Verdu at Netflix?
Netflix hired Verdu in July 2021 as vice president of game development to lead its games effort, according to Game File and Game Developer. He later moved out of the division leadership role. In 2024, he took on a vice president role focused on generative AI for games; Game Developer reported that a leadership reshuffle eventually brought former Epic Games executive Alain Tascan in to lead the division.

On March 11, 2025, Game File reported Verdu had left Netflix and that a Netflix representative confirmed his departure. Game Developer covered the confirmation the following day. Neither report established a reason for his exit.
Why did Mike Verdu leave Netflix?
The available reporting does not say. It does not characterize Verdu’s departure as a firing or resignation, identify a disagreement, or establish a connection between Netflix’s changing games priorities and his exit. His earlier move into generative AI is part of the timeline, but it is not evidence of why he left.

What is changing in Netflix Games?
Netflix’s public statements point to refinement rather than a single, clearly documented pivot. In its March 5, 2025 company conference presentation, Netflix described games as part of its membership offering and identified narrative storytelling and TV party games among its focus areas. Those priorities show how the company framed its games business at that time; they do not provide a complete account of its strategy or explain Verdu’s departure.
The company had also described a connection between games and its shows. During its January 21, 2025 earnings call, Netflix cited Squid Game: Unleashed as an example of a show and a simultaneous game offering, while saying it would continue to refine its strategy. That statement suggests continuity in linking games to Netflix programming alongside attention to other formats and experiences.

How to read the leadership change alongside the strategy shift
The chronology is clear, but the cause is not: Verdu led the games effort, moved to a generative-AI role in 2024, and left in March 2025. Separately, Netflix was describing games included with membership and naming narrative and TV party games as focus areas. The documented facts do not show that one event caused the other.
