Start by fully closing Genshin Impact, disconnecting any VPN or proxy temporarily, and testing the other connection type—Wi-Fi or mobile data. Reopen the game only after your phone shows the new connection is active. The right next step depends on the exact error code: HoYoverse gives different instructions for codes 9908 and 4214, so note any number shown with the message before troubleshooting further.
Try these quick connection checks first
- Close the game completely. Reopen Genshin Impact once and record the exact message and any numeric error code.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy. This is an isolation check, not a guaranteed fix; retry the game without it, then restore it if the error remains.
- Switch networks. Close the game, move from Wi-Fi to mobile data or vice versa, wait until the phone confirms the new connection is active, and reopen the game.
- Restart the connection that fails. If Wi-Fi is the problem, restart the router. If mobile data is the problem, toggle airplane mode on and off or restart the phone.
These checks help distinguish a problem on one connection from an issue that persists across both. HoYoverse’s troubleshooting advice varies by code; a generic “Network Error” alone does not establish one universal cause.
Follow the instructions for the error code shown
Code 9908: resource download or data problem
HoYoverse describes code 9908 as “Failed to Download Resource Files / Network Error” and says it can involve network issues or corrupted data. Its Help Center article, updated November 10, 2025, states: “This error indicates a problem downloading game files due to network issues or corrupted data.” That explanation applies to code 9908’s resource-download problem, not automatically to every generic connection message. For 9908, HoYoverse recommends switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data or restarting the router. If those steps do not resolve the problem on Android or iOS, its listed next step is to fully reinstall the game. Reinstallation may require downloading game resources again, so leave it until after the simpler network checks.
Code 4214: unable to connect to server
HoYoverse lists separate connection advice for code 4214. On Wi-Fi, restart the router first. If that does not help, its guidance mentions a router factory reset and updating the router system. A factory reset can erase settings such as the network name and password, so use it only as a later step and be prepared to restore your configuration. On mobile data, toggle airplane mode on and off or restart the device. These are the instructions for 4214, not a blanket remedy for every error message. See HoYoverse’s code-specific guidance.
Use the results to narrow down the problem
- Only Wi-Fi fails: focus on the router and Wi-Fi connection; try the game on mobile data as a comparison.
- Only mobile data fails: toggle airplane mode or restart the phone, then compare with Wi-Fi.
- Both connections fail: check whether other apps can access the internet on the same connection. If they can but Genshin still cannot connect, collect the details below and contact support.
This comparison does not prove whether the cause is the device, game data, network provider, or a service-side issue. The official guidance separates errors by code rather than assigning a single cause to the generic phrase.

When to contact HoYoverse Support
If Genshin Impact remains the only app that cannot connect after the basic checks, report the issue to HoYoverse Support. Include the exact error code and message, your server region, local time when it occurred, network provider, UID, a screenshot, and the steps you already tried. These details help support distinguish the specific failure from a general connectivity problem.
